“You‘ll belong to the streets!”
This book does a great job of not only providing historical accuracy but also cultural representations of Italian immigrants.

I enjoyed the historical implications of the book. I think this book allows the reader to go back in time to be an immigrant in the early 20th century in America. The illustrations are a cool water color that sort of molds all together.
Peppe The Lamplighter by Elisa Bartone is a great HF story. This won the Caldecott honor award. This book is about a boy who takes over someone‘s job for a little while as a lamplighter in Italy. I would use this as IR to let the students examine the pictures up close, which are so nice. I would use ESOL strategy 6 and continually monitor the student‘s comprehension as they read this story. I would use UDL 2.1 to help them clarify the vocabulary.
“So Peppe lit the street lamps once again, pretending with all his might that each one was a small flame of promise for tomorrow like it used to be”
The illustrations in this book perfectly accompany the beautiful written words in this story.

“You scare the dark away”
This whole first piece of the page is so adorable and meaningful because this whole time Peppe has be discouraged about his job he didn‘t realize how important it was to others! It just goes to show that the work you do does not go unnoticed by others and can actually help them a lot more than you realize!
Published in 1993 and illustrated by Ted Lewin, this historical fiction book tells the story of families immigrating from Italy to America to start a life. This story incorporates the struggle of immigrants finding work and how important that work is to them. It also has a softer side to the story that makes you feel for the characters!
