A piece of traditional literature (TL), this book was an amazing read and a great addition to all classrooms. This African tale has won the Caldecott Honor, Boston Globe Horn, and the Corbett‘s Scott King award. It tells a story of two beautiful sisters who have been called upon by the king to decide who he will marry. The king presents his self in many different ways throughout the story to see who is beautiful inside and out.

Laura.S Read to see who he chooses to marry and why. #UCFLAE3414SP18 https://www.woojr.com/mufaros-beautiful-daughters-lesson-plan-activities/ Link takes you to an amazing resource for lesson plans in all content areas that go along with this book! I would use this s a Storytelling (S) book because it was originally passed down by oral readings in Africa. It would be cool to recreate that in a classroom. 6y
Laura.S UDL 9.3, develop self-assessment and reflection goes along with the book because the main lesson of the story is to be kind and to look at yourself for who you are. EL 24, incorporate the culture of second language learners in your curriculum is able to checked off as this tale originated in Zimbabwe and we never know were our students will come from. 6y
Noelle5 I definitely can see how this won the Caldecott award- the cover is amazingly beautiful! 6y
JenniferMc What a beautiful story and promotes diversity and culture in the classroom. Your post makes me want to read this book to find out who he marries and why. 6y

This RF is a great book to have in the classroom because of its diversity. A Caldecott honor and Boston Globe Horn book, this read talks about a girl and her mother and grandmother who save money up. They are saving up all their coins from work to buy a new chair. This books shows the challenges that you go through in order to save money for something. #UCFLAE3414SP18 teacher.scholastic.com/upromise/k_2lessonplan/

Laura.S The link takes you to a lesson plan on saving money which is an important lesson to learn. This book would be great for a guided reading (GR) so that the teacher can read with the students and go over any key terms. I also found the book in Spanish which could help the teacher with guided reading and an EL learner. UDL 6.1 Guide appropriate goal-setting is perfect for the saving aspect of this book. EL 25 incorporate second language acquisition 6y
Laura.S Strategies in the curriculum is showcased by the second book in Spanish. It allows for guided reading to take place but offers another strategy. 6y
Noelle5 Diversity books is so crucial in schools. Everyone needs a book and a character they can relate to- in any grade. This is wonderful and this post makes me want to look into getting my hands on this book! 6y
V.DeQuattro I love how you found the book in both English and Spanish! Great for EL learners who need that extra practice or help. It is so important to have types of books like this so that every kid feels included and can find a passion for reading. 6y
KaitlynN I know that sometimes they print books in English one direction and in other languages the opposite way, like two books in one. I want to collect as many pairs as I can for my classroom library. I think this is so helpful for ELs. 6y

This biography (B) is about a boy named Henry Brown who goes through many hardships throughout his life as a black slave. He always seems to find a song to sing in these rough times. He loses much of his family throughout the slave trade but comes up with a plan to mail himself in a box to get to a free state. Will he make it? #UCFLAE3414SP18

Laura.S I would use this as an author study because Sally Walker has written other biographies which would be great for students to research. Https://www.teachingbooks.net/tb.cgi?a=1&aid=8978&a2=1 the link takes you to a page about the author and her books. This page also has resources to use with those books. UDL 9.2, facilitate personal coping skills and strategies aligns because Henry uses his “freedom song” as a coping skill during the hard times. 6y
Laura.S EL 13- use preview activities would be great to introduce slavery and that period of time before reading. This way students would know why African Americans were being sold/traded as slaves. 6y

This piece of traditional literature (TL) has a multitude of rhymes throughout with some older looking illustrations. (It was copyrighted in 1944) Some of the rhymes include Little Bo-Peep, Pat-a-Cake, and Humpty Dumpty. It would be fun to use this as a partner read as the students could read the rhymes to each other. It would be interesting to see which ones they actually know since most of these are before my time! #UCFLAE3414SP18

Laura.S www.nea.org/tools/lessons/51755.htm This site states that Mother Goose Day is May 1st! It also has resources such as rhymes recited on video. I would love to have a themed day in the classroom and possibly dress up as your favorite rhyme from the book. UDL 1.2, offer alternatives for auditory info could be used as many of the rhymes could be found online. EL 34, de-emphasize speed and emphasize accuracy would be useful to show kids to read slowly. 6y
V.DeQuattro Such a great traditional literature book! I like the lesson plan you attached. 6y
Noelle5 This book looks so cute! All classroom libraries need fun and silly books on top of the informational ones. This book as you mentioned could also be used for learning about rhyming. I really want to look into this book! :) 6y

This modern fantasy (F) book features Grin, a bottlenose dolphin, who meets many new sea friends. All of them are in trouble and need Grin‘s help. Throughout the book, it shows students how we can be friendly and help others. The illustrations are so creatively drawn and are very engaging. I would use this as a read aloud (RA) because of the colorful drawings, the fun rhyming scheme, and the life lesson it presents. #UCFLAE3414SP18

Laura.S Https://kids.nationalgeographic.com/animals/bottlenose-dolphin/ The link takes you to a kid friendly site about bottlenose dolphins. It would be really fun to tie in a science lesson about marine animals. UDL 7.2, optimize relevance and value aligns because this book teaches important values. This short chapter book is filled with poems (P) about God doing everyday things we do: God woke up, God got arrested, God made spaghetti. This book is for an older audience such as 6th grade and would be a book that students would choose since it does have a religious theme. This Boston Globe Honor book would be great for partner reading because the students could take turns reading stanzas and interpreting them. #UCFLAE3414SP18

Laura.S Https://www.teachingbooks.net/tb.cgi?tid=46521&a=1 The link takes you to some resources about the author such as interviews. UDL 2.3, support decoding of text aligns because poetry often requires students to decode and interpret texts. EL 38, assign short readings for homework, aligns because each poem is no longer than 2 pages. This book is great because it depicts a figure such as God, doing every day things which helps to relate us to him. 6y
JordanL This is an interesting Poem book, your homework for EL fits perfectly due to size of the poems, great idea! 6y
Hervela.L Wow this is a must read it sounds like an amazing book. Everything was well put together, great job again. I love UDL & EL strategy 6y

He gets the opportunity to light the street lamps for the man since he‘s leaving. His dad does not seem pleased by the employment and makes sure his son knows. #UCFLAE3414SP18 this would make for a great storytelling activity and maybe even a dress up

Laura.S Https://www. teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Peppe-the-Lamplighter-Lesson-Plans-Activities-Package-Second-Grade-CCSS-713299 resource has many lessons that correspond with this book. EL 3, encourage self-talk (positive thinking) also helps to analyze Peppe and his feelings in the story. 6y

In this Caldecott Honor book, Patrick McDonnell tells the story of young Jane Goodall and how her love for animals, specifically chimpanzees, started. In the Nonfiction Biography, they explain how she started with a stuffed animal chimpanzee and later found her passion. Beautiful illustrations and very simple to follow. Great book for a science lesson or a lesson on biographies. #UCFLAE3414SP18

UDL 6.3, facilitate managing information and resources aligns because students have to take in the information they are learning about Jane. EL 39, have students prepare collections of science objects, would work perfectly in a science lesson/experiment. (edited) 6y
Laura.S I would use this a read aloud because the sentences are simple enough for whole class comprehension and the pictures allow the students to see the story. 6y
DrSpalding This is an excellent choice for a children‘s biography. I agreed with the read aloud strategy as well as providing it as a resource for further research. Sharing biographies about successful female scientists is important in our elementary classrooms. 6y

This TL book by Alvin Granoswky is such an amazing book for teaching not only the classic Cinderella but also teaching points of view. The first half of the book is a retelling of Cinderella and the other half is the story from an evil stepsisters view. I would use this as a storytelling strategy but I would also focus on using this in a language arts lesson. #UCFLAE3414SP18

Laura.S Http://www.readwritethink.org/classroom-respurces/lesson-plans/charting-characters-more-complete-267.html this lesson is for comparing characters points of view which is perfect for this book. Https://www.magictreehouse.com/books/125212/sea-monsters #UCFLAE3414SP18

Laura.S I would use this book for an author study because the authors have created such an amazing series. UDL 3.3 aligns in that this book gives lots of information for students to process. EL 20 is super important because it states important words should be put in presentations or on the board. This book would be so much fun to read during a science lesson! 6y

She then gets a visit from someone who sparks her imagination and teaches her a valuable lesson. #UCFLAE3414 Https://www.andreabeaty.com/rosie-revere-engineer.html

Laura.S I would love to do this as a Choral Read because the book uses rhyming words and children find it fun to read. UDL 9.1 promotes expectations and optimizes motivation which aligns great with this book because it teaches children to never give up and even though you may fail, you should not quit. EL 15 states to reinforce key ideas present which would be perfect. 6y

This science fiction is an amazing chapter book, especially for those students who feel like they want a little challenge. Winner of the John Newbery Medal, this book would be a great literature circle addition because I think it needs discussion as you read it. I felt like the “wrinkle in time” aspect was a bit confusing so I would be curious to see young kids comprehension of this. I have linked an article about L‘Engle that I find intriguing.

Laura.S As using this book with a literature circle I would engage EL standard 2 which is promoting cooperation along with EL 6, continually monitoring comprehension. UDL strategies line up with EL as 8.3 fosters collaboration and 6.4 enhances capacity for monitoring progress. I think this book is a solid choice and has a great story. The ending has a nice lesson/message for everyone. Love conquers ❤️ 6y
DrSpalding Many peers have expressed their concern over the higher level content present in this book. Kids can handle it with the support and facilitation of a teacher.
