A Gift Upon the Shore | M.K. Wren

In a post-apocalyptic wasteland, two women seek to preserve the small treasury of books available to them - a gift of knowledge and hope for future generations. [A] poignant expression of the durability, grace, and potential of the human spirit. Jean M. Auel, author of the Earths Children series In the 21st Century, civilization is crumbling under the burden of overpopulation, economic chaos, petty wars, a horrific pandemic, and finally, a nuclear war that inevitably results in a deadly nuclear winter. On the Oregon Coast, two women, writer Mary Hope and painter Rachel Morrow, scratch out a minimal existence as farmers. In what little time is available to them, they embark on the project that they hope will offer the gift of knowledge to future generations of survivorsthe preservation of the books: those available from their own collections and any they find at nearby abandoned houses. For years, Mary and Rachel are satisfied to labor at this task in their solitude, but a day comes when they encounter a young man who comes from a group of survivors on the southern coast. They call their community the Ark. An incredibly hopeful meeting, it might seem, until Rachel and Mary realize that the Arkites believe in only one bookthe Judeo-Christian bibleand regard all other books as blasphemous. Wrens post-nuclear world rings true, as do her compelling depictions of the subsistence-level daily life. Publishers Weekly "[Wrens] passionate concern with what gives life meaning carries the novel. Bailedbailed

There was a pandemic and a nuclear war, and now there is religion and a post-apocalyptic landscape. A small commune is surviving on the Oregon shore...

I tried. I really tried, but this isn‘t paced fast enough for me and I‘m not sure when, if ever I‘ll be in the mood for PA stories again. This was my second attempt at it— so I think it‘s time to say, “Not for me” and DNF it.

FWIW, Gabra Zackman seems to be a perfect match for this POV1 story 🎧

Pickpick

Mary Hope and Rachel Morrow find each other right before the end of the world. They survive a nuclear winter together and become sisters. Alone in their solitude they decide it is not enough to survive but to live. They choose to build a vault holding books Rachel has collected for whatever future generations may come. One day a stranger comes and he is from a settlement that believes the Bible is the truth and all other books are blasphemy. 👇🏼

Reggie This dark and lovely book was all about free thinking and wonder vs religious zealotry set against this ever present backdrop of nature. Written in 1990, it holds up pretty well. A heavy hearted pick!!! (edited) 6y

@Guildedearlobe Just wanted to say thanks for this book. The dedication is heartbreaking. I‘m a 100pgs from the end and have really... Have you ever seen Big Trouble in Little China. Where Lo Pan is running his hand through a floating specter of Kim Cattrall‘s character feeling her soul and spirit. Well this book is Lo Pan and I‘m Kim Cattrall. Lol. The way the story is rooted in nature reminds me of The Overstory by Richard Powers. Thanks again!!

Tanisha_A Love the dedication! 6y
Guildedearlobe I‘m glad your enjoying this. I first read this book when I was struggling with many aspects of my fundamentalist upbringing and it really affected me. I love its dark beauty. 6y
Reggie @Guildedearlobe I can see how. I loved the exchange between Mary and Miriam at the Sunday family meeting. How maybe art and music and people‘s artistic expression was an extension of her God, yet she chose not to see it. The prison she was in because she couldn‘t read. Her ignorance because of it. Powerful stuff. 6y

Spent some more time organizing my bookcase since for part of my vacation I want to fill in some holes in my library, mostly books that I lost for various reasons. I talked about my unfortunate habit of lending books to friends who lose them.

This book is one of my top 5 all time favorites. The copy on the right was the original binding I had which my friend lost and replaced with the middle trade PB version 🤨. The left is a beautiful Hardback.

Guildedearlobe If anyone likes 90s era Post Apocalyptic/Post Nuclear novels with strong female characters and haven‘t read this one I‘m willing to part with the Trade PB. Just let me know and I‘ll send it to you, as long as it‘s something you actually think you would read. 6y
Reggie I would like to read this, it might be in October when it gets read but I would like this if no one else come forth. 6y
Guildedearlobe @Reggie it‘s yours man. I‘ll send it out later today. 6y
Reggie @Guildedearlobe Thanks so much!!! 6y
