Scrapbook-like, with photos of personal documents from the era, this is a middle graders‘ deep dive into one white woman‘s experience in the Civil Rights movement. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️💫

Please note there is a picture book with the same name, which is tagged. I could not find this one in the database.

@Sharpeipup I think you‘d like this one.

Sharpeipup @megnews I read it today & while I enjoyed the story, I feel it wasn't written for a children's book audience. 4y
megnews @Sharpeipup it does seem like it might be marketed wrong. But I enjoyed it for what it was. 4y

I read this book for Netgalley earlier this year and I felt like it was a story that needed to be told. It's the story of a young white woman who took a stand for equality and civil rights. She took place in many rallies and most notably the Woolworths lunch counter protest. Her name was Joan Trumpauer Mullholland. Too often we forget the allies. The ones who stood beside us, fought with us, went to jail with us. I often ask myself...

TheNextBook ...who would sit with me? That number has grown but so has the list of those who dont recognize the inequality that still exist today. That's why books like this are important. We live in a time were people lack empathy and our comfortable with the current climate because they don't see how it applies to them. It affects everyone. We should all be willing to sit at the lunch counter. 8y

Sparkpuppypup I've so often thought about this..... what would I have done if I had lived back then? Would I have sat at the counter, would I have gone on marches, etc. I'm fairly quiet, and keep to myself a lot of the time, but I have absolutely no doubt in my mind, that HELL YES I would sit at that counter! 8y
TheNextBook @GeekyGirlBooks @Notafraidofwords @TrishB @Sparkpuppypup Together is where change is made. Looking at each other and realizing that we are all human and we all deserve respect and equality will be what helps make that change. 8y
Sparkpuppypup It's such a struggle to get people to change their way of thinking. I grew up with parents who were/are very racist, bigoted, homophobic, etc. My sister and I never shared their views or felt that way at all. We're "the liberal ***holes!" (That's what the rest of the family calls us.) But our brother is as racist and closed minded as them. So I'm wondering, how does this happen? Does it all come down to education? 8y
Sparkpuppypup I just feel like most people are the way they are, because their parents were that way, and their parents before them. So how and where exactly does the change take place? I wish I knew the answer. 8y
TrishB @Sparkpuppypup but you're not? I'm not (my parents same as yours!) I despair sometimes, but you have to carry on!! 8y
TrishB @TheNextBook exactly 😀 8y
Sparkpuppypup @TrishB Well I'm not, and my sister is not, but our brother definitely is. So what I'm wondering is, why did we turn out the way we did and he turn out the way he did? How does that happen in families and how can that apply to the change we need in the present day? How can you get people to change something that is so ingrained in their minds, generation after generation? It really does fill me with despair at times, I have to say. 8y
TrishB @Sparkpuppypup I know! I have no idea what the explanation is.....we can but plough on.... 8y
BookishFeminist 💙🙌🏼 I don't think I'll ever understand why some folks are so interested in boxing people into their perceived differences rather than find similarities. We're all human and worthy of respect, and IMO you give up a piece of your own humanity by denying it to someone else. May we all sit at the lunch counter together. Fuck, I'll even buy a round of sandwiches. 8y
TheNextBook @BookishFeminist Sandwiches on you and thank you and everyone @TrishB @Sparkpuppypup @Notafraidofwords @GeekyGirlBooks for sitting with me 😍 they wouldnt be able to handle us at the bus counter. 8y
TheNextBook Bus or lunch counter... edit fail! 😂 8y
