Comedy in a Minor Key
Comedy in a Minor Key: a novel | Hans Keilson
6 posts | 7 read | 12 to read
A penetrating study of ordinary people resisting the Nazi occupation and, true to its title, a dark comedy of wartime manners Comedy in a Minor Key tells the story of Wim and Marie, a Dutch couple who first hide a Jew they know as Nico, and must then dispose of his body when he dies of pneumonia. This novella, first published in 1947 and now translated into English for the first time, shows Hans Keilson at his best: deeply ironic, sympathetic, and brilliantly modern an heir to Joseph Roth and Franz Kafka. In 2008, when Keilson received Germanys prestigious Welt Literature Prize, the citation praised his work for exploring the destructive impulse at work in the twentieth century, down to its deepest psychological and spiritual ramifications. Comedy in a Minor Key introduces Australian readers to a forgotten classic author, a witness to World War II and a sophisticated storyteller whose books remain as fresh as when they first came to light.

The comedy, for me, was certainly very minor, to the extent that I assume the title is meant ironically, because while there were certainly the makings of a very dark farce, Keilson didn't take his story that way (unless I just don't get German humour 🤷🏻‍♂️). None of which is intended as criticism, as the story was very affecting & emotional, detailing the effects of living in a real-life dystopia, that of the Nazi occupation of the Netherlands.

Bookwomble Keilson was a psychoanalyst, so it's no surprise that the inner lives of his characters are so well drawn, though from a place of deep humanity, rather than as subjects or case studies. As Keilson lived some of what he writes here, it has a depth of truth about it.
Astonishingly, his books were forgotten, to be rediscovered when he was 100 years old, the year before his death, a bittersweet comedy in its own minor key, perhaps. 4⭐ #holocaust

Yesterday's full #bookhaul 📚
The tagged book sounds amazing - farcical & heartbreaking. A Dutch couple shelter a Jewish man during the Nazi occupation, but when he dies they have the potentially fatal problem of disposing of his body.
The Penguin is The Mirror of My Heart, a 1000 years of Persian women's poetry 💚
Bantam is a book of poetry steeped in the author's Scottish roots 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿
I've already posted about Tolkien & Drayton🐉🧚🏻‍♀️

One of the very first Holocaust-themed novels, published in 1947, it concerns a young, naive Dutch couple who agree to hide a Jewish man in their home during WWII. Then, he dies of pneumonia. What to do with a Jewish corpse under the Nazi occupation? Quietly powerful.

mauveandrosysky Wow, that does sound really powerful. 6y
SusanInTiburon Oh, that sounds worthwhile! 6y
