Dancing Lessons for the Advanced in Age
Dancing Lessons for the Advanced in Age | Bohumil Hrabal
4 posts | 3 read | 4 to read
Rake, drunkard, aesthete, gossip, raconteur extraordinaire: the narrator of Bohumil Hrabals rambling, rambunctious masterpiece Dancing Lessons for the Advanced in Age is all these and more. Speaking to a group of sunbathing women who remind him of lovers past, this elderly rou tells the story of his lifeor at least unburdens himself of a lifetimes worth of stories. Thus we learn of amatory conquests (and humiliations), of scandals both private and public, of military adventures and domestic feuds, of what things were like in the days of the monarchy and how theyve changed since. As the book tumbles restlessly forward, and the comic tone takes on darker shadings, we realize we are listening to a man talking as much out of desperation as from exuberance. Hrabal, one of the great Czech writers of the twentieth century, as well as an inveterate haunter of Pragues pubs and football stadiums, developed a unique method which he termed palavering, whereby characters gab and soliloquize with abandon. Part drunken boast, part soul-rending confession, part metaphysical poem on the nature of love and time, this astonishing novel (which unfolds in a single monumental sentence) shows why he has earned the admiration of such writers as Milan Kundera, John Banville, and Louise Erdrich.

#AndItsAugust Day 20 - Running and Jumping

The closest I get to running and jumping in life are when I'm dancing. Here are some books celebrating dance, both metaphorical and literal.

This is the #weirdestbook I've ever read. It is a story about an old man who walks up to six women sunbathing in the middle of a city and just starts talking about things that have happened to him in his life. It sounds like an average setting for any normal literary work, except for one thing: The entire book is only one sentence long, on 128 pages.

LeahBergen Whoa. 😳 7y
Lindy One-sentence novels are intriguing. I think this year's winner of the Goldsmiths Prize is one: 7y
charl08 Sounds worth a look. 7y

I don't know which of his books this quote comes from, but it popped up – excuse the pun – on Goodreads just now. I'd never heard of this Czech writer. Has anyone read anything of his?

SharonGoforth I read Too Loud A Solitude and loved it😊 8y
