Mehso-so

Brookmyre is a great story teller, but can be a little long-winded. This is the second Parlabane novel and there's the usual blend of action and satire.

These books are at the awkward stage where they are old enough to feel outdated, but not yet old enough to be delightfully vintage and reminiscent of a lost time.

Entertaining and satisfying enough, but also eyerollingly silly and a bit 90s.

Pickpick

Catching up with my reviews and this week i finished the mince pies and the second in the jack parlabane series which i enjoyed very much. A media mogul is murdered, a team of burglars seem to be set up for the killing, but when someone jack knows dies the maverick reporter starts to get involved. With dark humour and lots of political statement this bk written in the late 1990's hadn't dated and was a great read. Can't wait to read more.

Strong on plot but way over-written and desperately in need of a solid edit. The last third has some well-executed action scenes but there are simply too many explanatory flashbacks, and too many point-of-view sidebars. Brookmyre has never met a pop-culture reference he didn't like and, in my opinion, it interferes with his storytelling.

The first half of this was a real grind and it may be a while before I read another.
