Bloodshot Monochrome
Bloodshot Monochrome | Patience Agbabi
3 posts | 2 read | 1 to read
Bloodshot Monochrome is a glorious poetic take on all things black, white and read. Reinventing the sonnet, Patience Agbabi shines her euphoric, musical lines on everything from growing up to growing old, from Northern Soul to contract killers, from the retro to the brand new. Whether resurrecting the dead in 'Problem Pages', playing out noir dramas in 'Vicious Circle', or capturing moments of her own life in perfect snapshot, Agbabi's verse is sublimely lyrical and spiked with gleeful humour.

Punchy, urban and loud: not my standard poetic fare but I heard her read recently and then found this in the National Poetry Library's online collection. I love her sonnets, and was delighted to find even a *crown* of sonnets, no less! The specular poem "Josephine Baker Finds Herself" also demands a mention. The section "Problem Pages", on the other hand was... tiresome: a workshoppy gimmick. Uneven, then, but when she's good she's striking!

Great poetry collection, strong in themes and style. I had never read anything by her before but definitely will check out more. My favourite part were the couple of "Dear Patience" poems which are like fictional advice letters to real life poets and their problems.
