The Murder of Mary Russell
The Murder of Mary Russell: A novel of suspense featuring Mary Russell and Sherlock Holmes | Laurie R. King
Laurie R. Kings bestselling Mary RussellSherlock Holmes series weaves rich historical detail and provocative themes with intriguing characters and enthralling suspense. Russell and Holmes have become one of modern literatures most beloved teams. But does this adventure end it all? Mary Russell is used to dark secretsher own, and those of her famous partner and husband, Sherlock Holmes. Trust is a thing slowly given, but over the course of a decade together, the two have forged an indissoluble bond. And what of the other person to whom Mary Russell has opened her heart: the couples longtime housekeeper, Mrs. Hudson? Russells faith and affection are suddenly shattered when a man arrives on the doorstep claiming to be Mrs. Hudsons son. What Samuel Hudson tells Russell cannot possibly be true, yet she believes himas surely as she believes the threat of the gun in his hand. In a devastating instant, everything changes. And when the scene is discovereda pool of blood on the floor, the smell of gunpowder in the airthe most shocking revelation of all is that the grim clues point directly to Clara Hudson. Or rather to Clarissa, the woman she was before Baker Street. The key to Russells sacrifice lies in Mrs. Hudsons past. To uncover the truth, a frantic Sherlock Holmes must put aside his anguish and push deep into his housekeepers secretsto a time before her disguise was assumed, before her crimes were buried away. There is death here, and murder, and trust betrayed. And nothing will ever be the same. Advance praise for The Murder of Mary Russell Not only a high point in Kings long-running series, but a compelling demonstration of the ways inventive writers can continue to breathe new life into the Holmes-ian mythology . . . Both Holmes and Russell will have a chance to shine; in fact, the case achieves a rare balance between Holmes, Russell, and the mystery theyve been set.Kirkus Reviews (starred review) Praise for the award-winning novels of Laurie R. King The great marvel of Kings series is that shes managed to preserve the integrity of Holmess character and yet somehow conjure up a woman astute, edgy, and compelling enough to be the partner of his mind as well as his heart. The Washington Post Book World The most sustained feat of imagination in mystery fiction today.Lee Child A lively adventure in the very best of intellectual company. The New York Times Erudite, fascinating . . . by all odds the most successful re-creation of the famous inhabitant of 221B Baker Street ever attempted.Houston Chronicle Intricate clockworks, wheels within wheels.Booklist (starred review) Imaginative and subtle. The Seattle Times Impossible to put down.Romantic Times Remarkably beguiling. The Boston Globe From the Hardcover edition.

It's a Christmas present... so I've only got a few days to (carefully) read this one!! :-) I couldn't wait for my mum to read it first and lend it back to me so I'm sneakily reading it now. Anyone else have a sneaky read of books you're giving as presents?!!😂

Challenge 20 of 50: A book by an author who has written more than 20 books

Seeing as there are 19 novels in the Mary Russell series, and it's not her only series I am pretty confident using this one here. This is one of my favorite installments in the Mary Russell and Sherlock Holmes mysteries, and is number 14 in the series.

Laurie King‘s Holmes and Russell mysteries are great, and this one from 2016 is no exception! We‘re given Mrs. Hudson‘s back story and it‘s a doozy.

Mary meets the threatening Samuel Hudson who is searching for something of great value. Mrs. Hudson comes home to find what appear to be signs of Mary‘s murder. Finding the truth takes us on a wonderful, wild ride.

Have read all the King books in the Holmes/Russell series and The Murder of Mary Russell is excellent. You will never look at Mrs. Hudson (nor overlook her) in quite the same way again.

Today I finally read this short story that hints at events in MOMR and found it to be quite enjoyable as well.

The real story of how Mrs Hudson, long-suffering landlady came into Holmes' life. Well, and how she came to be "Mrs" and many other secrets. An enjoyable read, especially if you've read the rest of the series.

Bought this months ago and finally getting to read it 😆 Written in a different voice, from a different perspective, but not an unwelcome change. The latest from my favorite pastichier (if that's not a word it should be).

Chelsey Also I'm behind on bookish podcasts because I've been too busy reading. That is the point though, isn't it? 8y

i always look for the typeface detail. im a bit of a typography nerd. 🤓
quite enjoyed this one in the Mary Russell series. clever twists to such familiar characters. quite like how seamlessly Ms King inserts her historical details, too.

been saving this to reward myself for completing rewrites on draft #3! i've been a fan since series start. 🤓

the last Mary Russell book had some serious issues w/ Japanese culture & language so am hoping this one returns to form.

5 ⭐️ One of the best books in the series, in my opinion. I loved learning Mrs. Hudson's backstory, and how she and Holmes became entwined in each other's lives. Can't wait for the next one.

DGRachel I couldn't agree more. I loved this one, even though it was so different from the earlier novels in the series. 8y
CarrieKitz @DGRachel Her ability to change things up and keep the series fresh is amazing! 8y

So very disappointed in this book from one of my favorite writers. The book deals mostly with Mrs Hudson with Mary showing up only every now and then. And the ending? Is this a foreshadowing that the series is ending too.

Can't wait to start the latest installment of my favorite feminist detective series!

LyndseyReads Have you read Maisie Dobbs? I love detective fiction with a female protagonist. I might check this out after I finish with the Dobbs series. 9y
Chelsey @LyndseyReads I have! I liked it, but I have a special place in my heart for the Mary Russell books. She was the first female NT rational character I read, and I read the first volume at the same age she was, 15. The self recognition was immediate and so exciting. 9y
LyndseyReads @Chelsey Awesome! Sounds like this is just the series to take the place of (or surpass!) Maisie when I'm done. Thanks! 9y
