10 posts | 34 read | 2 reading | 7 to read
BONUS: This edition contains an excerpt from Laurie R. King's Pirate King. Only hours after Holmes and Russell return from solving one murky riddle on the moor, another knocks on their front door...literally. Its a mystery that begins during the Great War, when Gabriel Hughenfort died amidst scandalous rumors that have haunted the family ever since. But its not until Holmes and Russell arrive at Justice Hall, a home of unearthly perfection set in a garden modeled on Paradise, that they fully understand the irony echoed in the family motto, Justicia fortitudo mea est: A trail of ominous clues comprise a mystery that leads from an English hamlet to the city of Paris to the wild prairie of the New World. The trap is set, the game is afoot; but can Holmes and Russell catch an elusive killer--or has the murderer caught them?

Yes I have lots of books I‘m meant to be reading. No I‘m not going to read them, instead I‘m going to read the next Mary Russell and Sherlock Holmes. No. I don‘t care.

Palimpsest @verity This looks intriguing. Do you have to read the series in order or are they stand alone? 3y
Verity @Palimpsest I would read in order. This one in particular needs to be read after the previous one because it has characters returning and you won‘t quite understand/get the most of it without that. It‘s quite a complicated chronology too - the previous book is set in a gap in the first book. Easiest to go in order. It‘s worth it too I think 3y
Palimpsest @Verity Thank you for taking the time to answer my question! I‘ll be stacking them. Thanks again. 😊 3y

This one more than makes up for the questionableness of the last Mary Russell book. Enjoyed this immensely & have been loving this entire series very much!

My favorite installment in the Russell/Holmes series so far! A good story, deep character development, and intriguing mystery, and a deep sense of place. Loved the continuation of established relationships and the growth of new ones. I only wish that the characters in this story featured in future books.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2

So, these books have been around since the 90s, but I just discovered them and I love them. This is the fifth in the series and maybe the best one so far. These are true to the spirit of Sherlock Holmes and full of wonderful historical jewels.

Saturday morning reading. Hoping to finish this Mary Russell mystery today. I've been in the middle of a ton of books lately, and can't seem to finish any of them. Hope I hit a better reading groove soon! #bookandcoffee #Saturdayreading

The ultimate bedtime comfort reading. I adore Mary Russell, cranky feminist intellectual and Sherlock Holmes' unlikely partner in detecting and in life. I'm working my way through this series slowly and savoring each book--and luckily, I've still got several to go.
