Since my last post of The Flick I have made some progress in the Play. The story continues to encourage me to keep reading and finish the play. From where I left off not much has happened. The owner Steve has basically been forced to sell The Flick to a huge corporation. This is freighting to Avery, Sam and Rose because major companies will not keep actual film movies around. Instead the would move to digital.

The Flick by Annie Baker is a play that takes place in a run-down movie theater in the central Massachusetts. I have not yet completed this book but plan to do so. Three underpaid movie theatre employees Avery, Sam and Rose clean the theatres, run the movies, sell tickets, and practically operate the whole movie theatre. We follow as the characters reveal more about themselves and a type of romantic chemistry starts to build between Avery and Rose

This story follows the stale friendship of three underpaid coworkers at the local run down movie theatre. We see a series of events and conflicts following the three characters Sam, Avery and Rose. I find the atmosphere quite similar to the film, Napoleon Dynamite. If you enjoy that type of awkwardness, then you will love this Story.

So friends are in a production of this show and it is being done in an actual movie theater. It works wonderfully in that space and is fascinating to watch. The writing of the script makes it feel like you are actually peaking in on the lives of these employees.

2nd read through and this play remains absolutely stunning. It's beautiful, subtle and that gorgeous mixture of funny-sadness you find in Chekhov. I recommend this so so much! Especially if you don't get why people would read plays, give it a go!
