This is a Chinese novel published in the 16th century during the Ming dynasty- an account of the legendary pilgrimage of a Buddhist monk who travelled to the "Western Regions" (Central Asia and India) to obtain Buddhist sacred texts and returned after many trials and much suffering. It‘s one of THE Four Great Classical Novels of Chinese literature, the others being Romance of The Three Kingdom, Water Margin and Dream of The Red Chamber.

My eclectic buying spree. Had a debate with my brother in law about the TV show Monkey and decided to try the book.

Mehso-so

The monkey Sun Wukong becomes a pilgrim of the monk Xuanzang, who was instructed by the Buddha to go to India to take Buddhist sutras and bring them home to China.
Along the way they encounter many calamities but with the help of others and a lot of magic no real harm ever comes to them. The journey is at once an adventure story, and an extended allegory in which enlightenment can only be achieved with the help of others. #1001books
