The Girl and the Galdurian (Lightfall 1), by Tim Probert (2020)
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️💫

Premise: An anxious girl teams up with an adventurous stranger to search for her missing wizard grandfather.

Review: This is an adorable graphic novel featuring charming characters and stunning illustrations. I have some quibbles about the plotting, mostly how book one ended without any resolution and I‘m still not sure what the stakes are. Cont.

Mattsbookaday But overall this was really lovely and I‘ll definitely read on.

Bookish Pair: For another gross-generational unlikely pairing fantasy graphic novel, Nimona by ND Stevenson (2015)

I felt that this volume was had a slower pace, and I mean SLOW, that I couldn't really get into this one as much as the last two volumes until I saw the Nightmare Knight towards the end.

I like the brief moment between him and Princess Parfait. I felt like they have a funny relationship and I'm hoping for more an unexpected friendship.

Did May feel extra-long to anyone else?

Idle Grounds was my favorite! Sneaky & feverish.

Nettle & Bone is a *magical* listen.

I Hope This Finds You Well was a delightful change of pace.

Unraveling, though a reread, was spun as well as I remembered. Fascinating & timely, in a world that desperately needs more climate justice.

Marmalade is great in small spoonfuls. Dip in & out.

My heart is still recovering from Juno Loves Legs. It‘s visceral.

Avanders May always feels extra long to me… I don‘t know why 🤷‍♀️ 1mo
willaful @Avanders Are you a parent? It was a million years for me, with my daughter all stressed out before finals... 1mo
monalyisha @willaful No, but that totally makes sense! 1mo

An island theme park, similar to West World or Jurassic Park but for Dungeons and Dragons and Fantasy lovers, has been hijacked by the creators and a force field is keeping the corporate owner out.

Addy is hired, along with a few mercenaries, to sneak in and get the shield removed.

The writing isn‘t great and it‘s a little predictable, but I still loved it for its many fandom references- unicorns, sphynx, dragons, LOTR and more!

Marra, who is not-quite-a-nun & barely a princess, learns that her eldest sister was killed by her husband, the prince. Her middle sister is now married to the same man, crowned king; she stays pregnant to keep him from beating her — or at least hold him back a bit. Marra vows to save her sister, loosening the political noose around her neck, by killing the monster. She assembles a band of not-so-merry, magical misfits to aid her in her quest.👇🏻

monalyisha 1/3: This was my first T. Kingfisher. It won‘t be my last. Two words: “tooth. dancer.” That fantastically discomfiting imagery won‘t soon be forgotten. Amara Jasper‘s audiobook narration is pretty fab, too (with the exception of the way she pronounces, “Eh?”). 2mo
monalyisha 2/3: At first, I griped about repetition & Marra‘s immaturity but any complaints were soon quelched (though I could‘ve done without the “cursed child” character; evil puppets have never really done it for me). Soon enough, I yielded to total immersion in the story. 2mo
monalyisha 3/3: While not shying away from darkness, the tale somehow maintains a cozy vibe. And, as an added perk, the words Kingfisher chooses to end with are perfect. She leaves the story open to the possibility of further development while still providing a satisfying resolution. 2mo
shanaqui I really don't know how Kingfisher manages to put darkness and cosiness together so well. It's a consistent *thing* through all her books I've read: somehow it's cosy reading even when it's also dark and awful. 2mo
PlutoReads I will read anything by Kingfisher. 2mo

The author traveled to every country in the world & this memoir is about creating your own quest & completing it. While I think he comes from a place of privilege to be able to encourage people to drop everything and follow their dreams, some of his tips were helpful. I love tangible goals, like visit all 50 states & read all Shakespeare‘s plays.

“The more prepared you are, more spontaneous you can be.”

“A measurable goal is a good companion.”

I absolutely am in love with Splashmaster, I know.. I know, he's the villain for this one but he's also so freaking adorbs but then again there's also the Nightmare Knight, who got me intrigued due to his one action so I came away liking the villains in this book a lot more than any of the other characters. Didn't like the new character but we'll see ..

Personally I want to see more of the Nightmare Knight 😂

Was able to stop in Wilmington (southern Vermont) yesterday to get a stamp on my Vermont Independent Bookstore Passport. What a sweet little town with a fabulous bookstore! Excited about these books. Miller, a Vermont author, wrote the tagged book which was sooo good and I encourage folks to check it out. Can‘t wait to check his newest one out. Hmmmm…can‘t remember how to tag. #TheMemoirsofStockholmSven

BarbaraBB Great haul! I loved the tagged book! 4mo
Suet624 @BarbaraBB thanks! And yes, I really like this author. 4mo
BooksandCoffee4Me Spent a wonderful two weeks at the Putney Inn in Putney, Vermont about ten years ago. Drove upstate to Lake Champlaigne (sp?). I would love to see Vermont in the fall! 4mo
Suet624 @BooksandCoffee4Me Hi Laurie, I live in northern Vermont and rarely get to the southern part of the state (which is where Wilmington is) so it's been a delight to do this Passport program and see towns I don't normally go to. For instance, I've never been to Putney even though I've lived here for almost 50 years. I lived right on Lake Champlain for about 20 years - a spectacular lake. Come to Vermont! Get in touch if you do! 4mo

I absolutely enjoyed this!
I'm so much older than the inspired ages for this but it was a fun read especially as this book veers away from the usual hero arc and makes light of other fantasy tropes in a way that lets a younger sister take the lead and be a hero as her older brother just wants to go to magic school.
And with that cliffhanger, I need to know what happens to our brother and sister team now!
