Quantum Night
Quantum Night | Robert J. Sawyer
8 posts | 9 read | 17 to read
With such compelling and provocative novels as Red Planet Blues, FlashForward and The WWW Trilogy, Robert J. Sawyer has proven himself to be “a writer of boundless confidence and bold scientific extrapolation” (New York Times). Now, the Hugo and Nebula Award-winning author explores the thin line between good and evil that every human being is capable of crossing… Experimental psychologist Jim Marchuk has developed a flawless technique for identifying the previously undetected psychopaths lurking everywhere in society. But while being cross-examined about his breakthrough in court, Jim is shocked to discover that he has lost his memories of six months of his life from twenty years previously—a dark time during which he himself committed heinous acts. Jim is reunited with Kayla Huron, his forgotten girlfriend from his lost period and now a quantum physicist who has made a stunning discovery about the nature of human consciousness. As a rising tide of violence and hate sweeps across the globe, the psychologist and the physicist combine forces in a race against time to see if they can do the impossible—change human nature—before the entire world descends into darkness. From the Hardcover edition.

A good book of what if. What if most of humanity is wandering around without internal narration? What if there are a bunch of psychopaths out there? What if someone lived by the moral precepts of Peter Singer - and Jeremy Bentham? What if the US invaded Canada? What if most people are blindly following strong leaders? It‘s uncomfortable and male-focused (there *are* important feminist philosophers & theorists out there) but interesting:

Reading this book - waaaaay creepier than I expected - to my #sciencefiction book group. Now very worried about the potential number of p-zeds and psychopaths out there (I need to figure out what of the book is science and what is fiction! 😂😮👀👀👀)

This book is interesting but I don‘t like the main character and no explanation for the world suddenly going crazy is ever given. I wonder if I‘m just a p-zed?

Pickpick

A sound entry to Rob's canon that follows his traditional modus operandi. He takes a couple of compelling scientific ideas, puts them together and humanizes the impact. Well done as usual. Very near future SF in this case. Worth the read for the Canadian settings and predictions about the US presidency alone.

I sort of hated every moment of this book while simultaneously having a great time reading it. The writing feels very self-conscious, the implications are eyebrow raising, and the main character is a tool. But it was entertaining as hell. Can't wait to chat about this with my book club.

If you like Dark Matter, stories that involve quantum physics, or red books in general, give Quantun Night a shot. Speaking of Robert Sawyer, he and I will share the stage at the IFOA in Toronto on August 25, 2016.

LeahBergen Oh, good company. I've been to see Robert Sawyer and he's a great speaker/reader. 8y
DaveNeufeld RJS is the king! Sadly Quantum Night is not for me 😞 but that sounds like a heckuva bill. Come hit us up in Calgary soon 😊 8y

It's Canada Day and I'm working - so here is a picture of a table full of awesome books by awesome Canadian authors!! Fun Friday Photo @Liberty

Owlizabeth @Liberty maybe y'all can help me. I picked up a fantastic book on a trip to Canada about 12 years ago (I'm OLD). It had won some Canadian book awards. It was about a woman who was shipwrecked/left on an island on the St. Lawrence in early colonial days and how she survived. Ringing any bells? 🤔 8y
DaveNeufeld There was a time when I would have named Robert Sawyer as my favourite author, but his last few books have been less and less readable for me. I'm very sorry to say that I think Quantum Night might be my least favourite SciFi novel I've ever read. I just don't get it 😥 8y
StaceyKondla @DaveNeufeld Robert J Sawyer is definitely not for everyone. I thought Quantum Night was good, but it read more like a medical/psychological thriller to me. And lots of other great authors on that table 😊 8y
StaceyKondla @Owlizabeth - I'm sorry the book description doesn't ring any bells - hope you find out the title and author 😊 8y
