Started this one today - I have only recently learned a little about Lillian Hellman. This is a fictionalized story of her relationship with Dashiel Hammett. She was far more than just Dash Hammett‘s girlfriend in real life and I look forward to learning more about this fascinating woman.

The past month has been so busy, I‘ve been quite absent from Litsy. I had to make time to share this though as I am enjoying it far more than I thought I would! Such a fun story, love the historical detail, and a great narrator.

Bookzombie It's been a while since I read this one, but I remember really enjoying it. However, the movie adaptation was disappointing. 3mo
StaceyKondla @Bookzombie - I don‘t doubt the movie was bad. I find that movies very seldom live up to the books they are based off and tend to avoid watching them 😊 3mo

It‘s been a long, but productive week, and with crumby weather today, raging hormones, and crap news from the US and my own home province this week, I‘ve been in a completely shitty mood. I‘m turning off the work and the news, and snuggling up in comfy pajama‘s with this backlist to indulge the historical crime jag I‘ve been on. Perhaps a touch ironic that this is my “therapy” this evening 😉

As much as I love reading manuscripts and working, I took a break this weekend to recharge my brain and creativity. Tomorrow it‘s back to the kids projects feeling renewed and enthusiastic 💕

This story is a fresh and smart twist on zombie/apocalyptic fiction told from the primary point of view of a crow who was raised by a human, and whose best friend is a bloodhound. It is a commentary on our society and reliance on technology, an homage to Mother Nature, is pee-your-pants funny, heartwarming, and heartbreaking. It is a celebration of friendship and love and hope. I can not recommend it enough! (Also, the Cheetos are important) 😉❤️

Love the premise. It makes the topics of internment and fascism accessible to young readers. For that reason this is an important book and a valuable classroom resource. I also love that it is an open shot at Donald Trump. Because I have read extensively about the Holocaust/Japanese internment during WWII this book fell flat for me emotionally. Still glad I read it and would recommend to young readers without hesitation for the message alone.

This book exceeded my expectations. The writing is engaging and compelling. And best of all, I loved how the author, Kara Cooney, draws parallels between these women rulers of Ancient Egypt and the way women continue to be viewed and treated in leadership roles today due to the ongoing patriarchy.
