In February 1910, as trains chugged through portions of the Cascades that are challenging to access, a series of storms dumped feet of snow, trapping them. Efforts to clear the tracks were stymied by more snow as well as rain and after 6 days of efforts, the worst outcome: an avalanche hit one of the trains. This book is taut, well-paced, and fascinating. They do describe finding the victims, in case you wouldn‘t want to read that.

Eggs Wow never heard of this disaster! 4y

This is a fascinating book if you're interested in the railroad in the early 1900s, avalanches and remembering a forgotten piece of Northwest history. Three yeses for me! It is well written, I found it to be a page turner. #pnw #history #libraryreads

A piece of #PNW history that seems especially apt with all the snow falling in the mountains right now. Krist tells an engrossing story with perhaps a little too much hero worship, but that's a tiny quibble. The mechanics of avalanches are fascinating - this was the deadliest! My review here with bonus train disaster! https://respekt1111.com/2016/12/06/booknado-2016-december-cascades-of-horror/

cathysaid Now there's a phrase rarely seen: "bonus train disaster." ? 8y
