5⭐️ I was really surprised that I liked this book. While I wasn‘t really surprised at how well the story was written, I was surprised at how much I enjoyed it and how much it drew me in. I also liked how the author made the cancer storyline very believable. I didn‘t know I had breast cancer until there was a shooting pain in my breast; breast cancer doesn‘t always make itself known with the usual signs. ⤵️

El Cucuy Is Scared, Too! | Donna Barba Higuera

#PNW debut author Donna Barba Higuera writes about moving to a new community and overcoming homesickness and fear of fitting in at school. I love the Spanglish, but still need more pronounciation and translation support before reading this out loud. Spanish is my 3rd language, I need more practice.

If I could describe this title... at the moment... in five words, they would be: twisted religious beliefs, blood atonement.

Christine Oh wow - I feel like I have watched several Dateline episodes about these two. 2y
Librariana @Christine - And I can't say I've watched a single one, but there was quite a bit of news coverage about them here in the PNW at the time of the children's presumed disappearance. The author is going more in depth into the history of LDS at this spot in the book... its fringe groups and some of their more anti-government ideologies... how those have sometimes influenced and are connected to past crimes in the US like Manson, McVeigh, etc. 2y
Christine That‘s definitely the most interesting part of the story to me - sounds like this book is going well beyond the sensationalist aspects (there are so many to choose from!). 2y

Mehso-so

In 1970, reporter Paul Linnman was sent to the Oregon Coast to cover a unique method of removing a dead whale: dynamite. Unsurprisingly, the story came to define his life and he eventually decided to write a book around the events with some other bits thrown in. The whale parts were fun, but overall this wasn‘t terribly engaging and took me a while to get through. If you haven‘t seen the video, though, definitely look for it!

Nominated for #WCCPBA
I just read this 19 times #outloud to my K-5 students. It encapsulates great and less remembered moments in the Civil Rights movement before 1968. I took a moment with some students to explain that TV was new like TikTok today. People were watching for the 1st time and they were outraged. I was fascinated that out of about 340 students, only one drew a comparison to Colin Kaepernick. I live in a social justice desert.

mandarchy If you teach 3rd through 8th grade, I hope you can add this to your library. The author has a video that my students loved on her website. It's basically 30 minutes of Elgin Baylor making basketball look easy. 3y
mandarchy If you want to make a #PNW connection, it's mentioned in the book that Baylor lived in and attended schools in Idaho and Seattle. He grew up in D.C. 3y

I'm re-reading the Outlander series and taking my time. I'm only in the 4th book. I'm okay with being late due the new book release. Today is the last day of harvest break and yesterday I read until the Kindle died late at night. I can't believe I woke up in time for this spectacular light show. I have all these things to do to get ready for the week, but the Kindle is recharged and Claire just got her shoes back. Clarence just got to the ridge⤵️

Hubby and I have been busy the last couple of weeks working on our front yard 😊

It's been a slightly tiresome yet very rewarding experience!

Above are the plans I drew out to have a record of what we planted and although these won't be in all their glorious, fully grown beauty by the time my in-laws come for their visit in a couple of days, the scabiosa is already blooming!

#gardening #pnw

Bklover I love your plans! Very professional looking. You‘ll have to show us the final product! 3y
vivastory This is fantastic, Ana! 🌻🌼🌺 3y
