Gold from the Stone
Gold from the Stone: New and Selected Poems | Lemn Sissay
15 posts | 3 read | 5 to read
Lemn Sissay was seventeen when he wrote his first poetry book, which he hand-sold to the miners and mill workers of Wigan. Since then his poems have become landmarks, sculpted in granite and built from concrete, recorded on era-defining albums and declaimed in over twenty countries. He has performed to thousands of football fans at the FA Cup Final, to hundreds of thousands as the poet of the 2012 Olympics, and to millions across our TV screens and the airwaves of BBC Radio. He has become one of the nation's best-loved voices.

I absolutely loved this. Lemn Sissay has a great lyrical style - a lot of these poems kind of read like song lyrics. His writing is so heartfelt and passionate. A lot of his poems (especially the earlier ones) are full of anger (quite rightly) about his childhood and his experiences in the care system and of racism. He also writes about relationships (of course), Manchester, climate change, and shooting magpies. A hugely enjoyable collection.

We... We ran like the water,
Cupped in hands,

I really enjoyed this collection of poetry. I saw him read from the book at the Chester literary festival. They mainly document his life as a foster child and the repercussions of that, as well as his identity as a Mancunian and an Ethiopian. He's a great man - he organises a Christmas Day meal every year for young adults who have left foster Care, complete with a full meal and Christmas presents. AND he writes thoughtful, topical poetry!

I love this. It was commissioned and read in Manchester, U.K. on the anniversary of the Battle of the Somme in June 2016. You'll have to excuse my photography 'skills' ?(the end of the first line in the last stanza should be "first born" - sorry!!)

This would be appropriate here in the UK (and elsewhere, I suppose!) at the moment.

Cooking curry and reading this - a good start to the weekend, I'd say! Although not the cheeriest of subject matter, let's be honest.
