Female Malady: Women, Madness and English Culture 1830-1980 | Elaine Showalter
A vital counter-interpretation of madness in women, showing how it is often a consequence of, rather than a deviation from, the traditional female role.

As a woman who has lived with mental health issues since her early teens (and now a History degree), I've always been interested in the history of women's mental health and the 'treatments' forced upon them.
This book has been on my TBR shelf for over a year (along with Hysteria by Andrew Scull & Mad, Bad, and Sad by Lisa Appignanesi) until I felt the time was right for me to really dive into the subject. Now is that time.
