A heartbreaking novel about living with your worst mistake, from New York Times bestselling author Barry Lyga. A chunk of old memory, adrift in a pool of blood. Sebastian Cody did something horrible, something no one--not even Sebastian himself--can forgive. At the age of four, he accidentally shot and killed his infant sister with his father's gun. Now, ten years later, Sebastian has lived with the guilt and horror for his entire life. With his best friend away for the summer, Sebastian has only a new friend--Aneesa--to distract him from his darkest thoughts. But even this relationship cannot blunt the pain of his past. Because Sebastian knows exactly how to rectify his childhood crime and sanctify his past. It took a gun to get him into this. Now he needs a gun to get out. Unflinching and honest, Bang is as true and as relevant as tomorrow's headlines, the story of one boy and one moment in time that cannot be reclaimed.

This one really tugged at my heart strings.

A 4 year accidentally shoots his baby sister and the story focuses upon life for a teenage boy after a tragic loss, depression, and grief.

As I continue working though an extensive list of teen books dealing with real life social issues, I expected to become numb to the eating disorders, rape, suicide, drug, racism, bullying... I was wrong. Each touches a part of my soul and makes me thankful for the few years that displace myself from teens today. I am gratful to have had less social media during school and pretend to live in my bubble. I am even more grateful for eye opening reads.

Sukesh Rightly said. Social media was real culprit of many emerging social issues 7y

I look forward to the next standalone from Barry Lyga! I enjoyed the story of this teenage boy trying to figure out how to live given his traumatic past. This book could‘ve gone a lot darker and I‘m glad it didn‘t. It was a mature look at how to handle a controversial issue!

TommieMarie74 That sounds like a really emotionally-heavy book. I‘ve considered it but am afraid it would be too upsetting. 7y
MyNamesParadise @TommieMarie74 if gun violence or the loss of a loved one has touched you, especially recently, it would be too much I think. Neither has touched me, but I have major depression and chronic anxiety, so at points I could relate and it became a lot for me. Have you read anything else by Barry Lyga? 7y

#TBRTemptation I saw this post on a teacher page I follow and had to immediately add it to my TBR. As someone who works with teens everyday and sees the horrific things some of our young people have experienced, this feels like a must-read book.

Mariposa_Bookworm I saw this too! I follow the same page on Facebook! I have to read this. 7y
AndreaReads @Mariposa_Bookworm That's totally what I thought when I read her blurb! 7y

This book was so good. In some ways in reminded me a lot of A Man Called Ove.

Started this today and it's hard to put down. I had to, but while I'm not reading it I am thinking of the characters.

The author was at the local bookstore near my parents today. Unfortunately I couldn't be there.
