@debthmpsn Thank you so so much for my #sockswap package. I‘ve been out of town and had to rip into the presents the second I got home. I‘m so excited to read The Invisible Library and my boyfriend has already tried to steal my Woodstock journal. (Don‘t worry, I fought him off. That journal is MINE!) And the kitty astronaut socks? They are my new favorites! Thank you again! What a great way to start my first day home!! ❤️

But I‘m the meantime, @Eggs your #sockswap package headed out on Tuesday and should be at your doorstep in a day or two. In my hurry to get it to you, I forgot to take a picture of the package but it has definitely been sent. 😊

I finished this book a couple weeks ago but wasn‘t quite sure how I felt about it. I have very mixed emotions, even now. The writing was stellar, truly beautiful, but I often felt that it wasn‘t the voice of a 17 year old even though it was supposed to be. Additionally, there were moments in the book that I felt were unnecessary to the story line and turned me off. But the desperation and obsessive behavior of an infatuated teen were captured ⬇️

TommieMarie74 well. I think, overall, this was a lovely book and I‘m glad I read it. I don‘t believe it will ever be considered a “classic” because of the couple of overly graphic scenes but I do believe we will co to us to see great things from Aciman. 6y

raelaschoenherr @TommieMarie74 We are super close! We “got along” as kids—bickered all the time and drive my mom crazy but when she suggested that we play separately we never wanted to 😆 I actually never wanted a sister...I liked being the daughter in the family, but I had girlfriends over to play all the time so they kind of felt like sisters! 6y

I‘m using the re-read of my favorite book as an opportunity to share a photo of my new bed. It‘s so pretty! Reading Ethan Frome is like curling up in bed, cozy and familiar. I love the descriptive nature of Wharton‘s writing and the simple beauty of this novel. It says so much but seems effortless.

I‘m looking for help from my fellow Littens. I‘ve taken an unusual route to teaching and am finishing my MSE without teaching certification. Meaning I am teaching high school English this fall on a restricted alternative license. So while I study for the Praxis and finish my final semester, I‘m thinking I should reread some classics in preparation for August. I could really use your recommendations for books currently being taught in HS English.

DebbieGrillo I'd suggest reading everything by Penny Kittle, Kelly Gallagher and Allison Marchetti & Rebekah O'Dell instead. I mean you can't go wrong with To Kill a Mockingbird, Of Mice and Men, 1984 and The Scarlett Letter. But if your district is progressive at all there might not be whole class novel required reading. The best practice favors self selected reading, with teacher guidace. Popular and literary fiction and non-fiction. #teachersoflitsy 6y
Redwritinghood My kids have been reading To Kill a Mockingbird, Lord of the Flies, Catcher in the Rye, Brave New World, and Fahrenheit 451 in English this year. 6y
ofclumsywords My English teacher once did a project splitting the class into groups of two or three kids and had a handful of classics (In Cold Blood, Old Man and the Sea and so on) and let each group pick which book they wanted to buddy read together and had weekly quizzes on each book and then had each group did a presentation once they were finished (edited) 6y

Pamwurtzler One of my daughters spent an entire semester on To Kill a Mockingbird. I seem to remember this as well- 6y
CSeydel To Kill a Mockingbird, Of Mice and Men, Lord of the Flies, I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, A Midsummer Night‘s Dream 6y
TheBookStacker To Kill a Mockingbird, Night by Eli Wiesel, The Bell Jar. Those are a few that have stuck with me evern through college (edited) 6y
AmyG 1984, Grapes of Wrath. I remember my kids reading The Power of One - Bryce Courtenay. I loved that book (I used to read what they read). 6y
Meeko93 The Great Gatsby, To Kill a Mockingbird, Of Mice and Men, Romeo and Juliet, I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings.. those are one I can remember and proety by Emily Dickinson. 6y
Blaire I don‘t know what‘s currently being taught - but we read hamlet, the odyssey, huckleberry Finn, brave new world, pride and prejudice, gatsby, go down Moses, the crucible, a dollshouse, one day in the life of Ivan denisovich, 6y
JoScho I took an alternate route too! 6y
AndreaReads I absolutely agree with @DebbieGrillo Penny Kittle and Kelly Gallagher just released a book they wrote together and it takes you through the 180 days we have with our kids. These two are experts about reading and they only read two whole class novels a year. Everything else can broken into Book Clubs and you typically have a little more freedom with Book Club choice! Good luck! You have a whole bunch of help here if/when you need it! 6y
Johanna414 I‘m also going to chime in with the recommendation to look up Penny Kittle and Keely Gallagher- I went to one of Penny Kittle‘s workshops recently and it was awesome! 6y
TommieMarie74 Thank you SO MUCH everyone! This is so helpful, you have no idea. Some of these I read in high school or college but there are some new ones here too. My summer will be busy, just making sure I‘m prepared! @Redwritinghood @Ofclumsywords @Pamwurtzler @CSeydel @TheBookStacker @AmyG @Meeko93 @Blaire 6y
TommieMarie74 I love the idea of limited class novel reading and using a “book club” format. Kansas is a Common Core state so I don‘t know how that will affect teaching HS lit but I‘m going to check out 180 Days, as well as Penny Kittle and Keely Gallagher, and hope that this type of class dynamic is a possibility. Thank you!! @DebbieGrillo @AndreaReads @Johanna414 6y
TommieMarie74 @JoScho That‘s awesome!! I‘d love to get your take on the process (and words of wisdom) sometime. 😊 6y
JoScho @TommieMarie74 of course. I called it teacher boot camp. We went for two weeks in the summer and of course had to pass all of the praxis exams and then were tossed into the classroom. Then we were on yearly contracts for the next three years until the end of the program and we became fully certified teachers. 6y
Meeko93 Another I thought of was Speak. 6y
TommieMarie74 @JoScho That sounds very similar to this program. You have to pass the Praxis tests and then find a job teaching. Once you have a job offer, you are officially enrolled in the program, attend a 4 day intensive training, and go right to the classroom. 😳 The program lasts two years. Not terrifying at all! 6y
TommieMarie74 @Meeko93 That‘s a good recommendation. I‘ll add it to the list. Thanks!! 6y
JoScho Very similar and it was terrifying at first because I felt unprepared and I am currently on year 13 teaching. I felt like I was being thrown to the wolves. You can do it! 6y
AndreaReads @TommieMarie74 Utah is a Common Core state as well (but we don‘t call it Common Core because it has a negative connotation and parents flipped). 🙄 Book Club format works really well because you can use individual books to teach the skills you need. Of course a lot of this depends on the school you end up with! I am happy to help you with anything you need! This is my tenth year and I have taught grades 7-12! 6y
TommieMarie74 @AndreaReads I did a little research and while Kansas is Common Core, they changed the name to the Kansas College and Career Ready Standards. Parents here flipped too and apparently the school board sent a letter out last fall announcing the “new” standards but the actual standards are the same. 😐 I‘ll feel a little better when I know where I‘ll be school- and grade-wise. But it helps to know I have people like you and @JoScho to turn to. ❤️❤️ 6y
JoScho Anytime! 😊 6y
CoffeeNBooks 1984, Lord of the Flies, Frankenstein, To Kill a Mockingbird, The Importance of Being Earnest, Anthem, Macbeth, Hamlet 6y
TommieMarie74 @CoffeeNBooks Thank you so much! I‘ve added these to my list. 😊 6y
CoffeeNBooks @TommieMarie74 I teach 12th grade English and AP Literature- let me know if you ever have any questions. ☺ 6y
staci.reads I will 2nd (or maybe 3rd) those that are suggesting you read Gallagher, Kittle, etc. I have taught English for 23 years, high school the last 18, and I have never had the success of getting kids to read as I have with the combo of whole class novels and book clubs. In addition, my independent reading component (Kittle's Passionate Readers Or Donalynn Miller's Book Whisperer) has turned my students into readers. Good luck! 6y

Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur | Brandon Montclare, Amy Reeder
post image

I read the first two volumes of this comic. There is a lot to like about it. It has a strong, smart girl who becomes a sort of hero and gives girls the opportunity to see that they can be strong and smart too. The artwork is cute and who doesn‘t love a dinosaur that says “mroo?” That being said, I just couldn‘t get into this comic. Moon girl is often whining about things liked her intelligence and I just had no patience for that.

dragondrool I tried to read the first volume as bout a month ago. I got about halfway through, but never did gain any traction with it. 6y

I finished this just over a week ago and really liked it. It had a brisk pace and the characters had good dimension. It had some technical jargon that I didn‘t know but was able to get with context; I blame that on this being written by someone who is a CIA agent first and an author second. The main characters were flawed but likable and the good vs evil was very blurred at times. I‘ve never read a spy novel before and have been wondering how ⬇️⬇️

TommieMarie74 realistic some of it was. Are there spies among us all the time and we don‘t know? Is espionage really going on all the time? How would we ever really know? I also saw the movie last weekend and enjoyed it as well. I would say it was about 15% similar to the book. Most of it deviates greatly, from major changes to characters, relationship dynamics, and the ending. It made some scenes seem gratuitous when they were very important in the book. 6y
LMJenkins Great review - agree with everything. Just listened to this recently and liked it a lot. Haven‘t seen movie yet. Thinking of reading the second in the trilogy soon. 6y
TommieMarie74 @LMJenkins Thanks! Based on the alternate ending, I‘m guessing there won‘t be more movies. The book also showed Putin in a not-so-good light and that was missing in the movies. That also leads me to believe the movie will be a stand alone. But I could be completely wrong. 🤷🏻‍♀️ I hope to start book two soon. (edited) 6y

This book really spoke to me. As someone who has struggled with anxiety and depression since grade school, I felt the protagonist‘s pain in many of the situations. I also found writing to be a form of catharsis for me and have remained an avid poet since I was 14. This book also opened my eyes about OCD. The author put a great deal of research into the diagnosis and gave a very vivid picture of the pain caused by this disorder. My father has OCD⬇️

TommieMarie74 and, while I‘ve watched his struggle for decades, I don‘t think I really understood what it meant. This book made me see my father in a new light. And it‘s made me want to learn more about this side of him that causes him such great pain. 6y

readherwriteher @TommieMarie74 Really? I‘ve never had Red Vines, but I don‘t mind red Twizzlers. I can‘t do black licorice of any kind. 🚫🤢 6y

The Sparrow: A Novel | Mary Doria Russell
Pickpick

This is one of the most thought-provoking, amazing books that I've ever read. I happened to see it while wandering around a book store and thought it sounded interesting. I had no idea. It's been a couple of years since I read it but I find myself still telling people about it and urging them to read it. It's too hard for me to give a good synopsis about the book without giving away the whole thing so I'll suffice it to say that this book is ⬇️

TommieMarie74 about a group of people that learn the true meaning of love, perseverance, survival, adversity, and faith. They discover that the truth of a person is what is inside of them and that there is great beauty in those different from yourself. I think what I most took away from this book is that all lives are full of beauty and full of suffering but that it‘s how you survive the latter that makes you appreciate the former. Pick up this book. 6y
Becker It‘s been on my TBR for years. Maybe this is my sign to bump it up. ⬆️ 6y
ErickaS_Flyleafunfurled This book scrambled my brain for a while, in a good way! 6y

KathyWheeler I loved this book! I liked its follow up, Children of God, as well. (edited) 6y
TommieMarie74 @Becker I definitely think so! 6y
TommieMarie74 @ErickaS_Flyleafunfurled Me too! I never expected what happened and I was so submerged in the story and the world, it was hard to go back to normal life. 6y
TommieMarie74 @KathyWheeler Me too! It was good to see how the main character was doing after all that happened. 6y

While I have many favorites, these three books left me speechless and...and...I can‘t even put it into words. They were amazing and I‘ve read them again and again. They definitely have #alltherightstuff. ❤️

Thanks @robinb for hosting the #alltherightstuffgiveaway. It was fun thinking back on some of my best reads over the years!

robinb Thanks for entering/sharing! Wow, these sound like heavy-hitters....thanks for the recs! Glad you enjoyed the look back...meanwhile, my TBR is exploding! 🤣🤣👍😊❤️ 6y

So my back is still a mess and I‘m COMPLETELY overwhelmed with school and my Master‘s project (how can I possibly finish this project in 8 weeks?). Luckily, the tagged book is giving me a small reprieve each evening, and tonight I have the additional comfort of my “F*ck off I‘m reading” socks and Finch‘s company. #catsoflitsy

AmyG Necessary socks. I have them, too. 6y

3. My favorite Jane Austen relationship is Emma and Mr. Knightley. They are friends for many years and familiar with each other. They each had their quirks and appreciated those quirks in each other.

2. Deciding on a favorite JA character was hard. I think I have to go with Mr. Knightley. His kindness, sharp wit, and down-to-earth nature make him a great character. And he could somehow see the goodness deep within Emma despite her silly, spoiled exterior.

1. Emma is my favorite Jane Austen novel. I‘ve always loved the hilarity of Emma‘s matchmaking skills, or lack thereof, and the constant switching of mismatched couples when one doesn‘t work out.

1. YA contemporary (like Sarah Dessen or John Green)
2. First full-time, adult job was legal secretary
3. It was Patient Advocate until I was terminated in December so right now I guess it‘s full-time grad student.
4. SPED Transition Specialist for students with cognitive disabilities.
5. Both, but usually I end up getting coffee. I don‘t drink caffeine so my coffee is just for show. Lol.

TommieMarie74 @Betty That is my dream job. I‘m completing my MSE in High Incidence Disabilities as well as Transition Services certification right now. I graduate in May. Any pointers or suggestions for finding a position? 6y
Betty @TommieMarie74 start applying now. Have you done any internships? Apply there too. 6y
TommieMarie74 @Betty I applied for one job but wasn‘t selected for an interview.I have a couple I‘m applying to this week. I also found one for a school registrar at the school that‘s the highest ranked for SPED and I thought it might be worth submitting there just to get my foot in the door. My biggest issue is I don‘t have teaching cert. I did the non-teaching track program. They made it seem like it wouldn‘t be an issue. Now, I‘m not so sure. 6y

1. This one‘s hard. I read most of the Harlequin books that were out when I was in grade school (thanks, Grandma). Does that count?
2. Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter, and House of Night
3. Shelve it if I love it, trade it for bookstore credit if I don‘t, and if I really want someone to read it I buy them their own copy. I‘ve been burned too many times loaning my books.
4. I don‘t but wish I did. I haven‘t found any around here.

TommieMarie74 Actually, the longest series I‘ve read would Anne of Green Gables. I read all the way through her adult years and the books about her daughter, Rilla. 6y
KatColmer Longest series would have to be Maggie Stiefvater‘s Shiver series. Only 4 books@and that was a while ago. 6y
KatColmer Series I gave up on ... I am number 4 Pitakus Lore. I think I got to the third and lost interest. 6y
KatColmer I‘m a librarian so I tend to borrow most off my books and shelf them back in the library 😉 6y

3. I had this really goofy book called The Thingamajig Book Of Manners. It had gross-ish, funny, troll-like characters that showed what you shouldn‘t do....like fart at the dinner table. I was obsessed with that book (I still have it) and I‘m guessing my first lessons came from it.
