The House of Small Shadows
The House of Small Shadows | Adam Nevill
13 posts | 16 read | 23 to read
Catherine's last job ended badly. Corporate bullying at a top TV network saw her fired and forced to leave London, but she was determined to get her life back. A new job and a few therapists later, things look much brighter. Especially when a challenging new project presents itself to catalogue the late M. H. Mason's wildly eccentric cache of antique dolls and puppets. Rarest of all, she'll get to examine his elaborate displays of posed, costumed and preserved animals, depicting bloody scenes from the Great War. Catherine can't believe her luck when Mason's elderly niece invites her to stay at Red House itself, where she maintains the collection until his niece exposes her to the dark message behind her uncle's "Art." Catherine tries to concentrate on the job, but Mason's damaged visions begin to raise dark shadows from her own past. Shadows she'd hoped therapy had finally erased. Soon the barriers between reality, sanity and memory start to merge and some truths seem too terrible to be real... in The House of Small Shadows by Adam Nevill.

This is my first Nevill book but I will definitely be reading more after looking into his other novels. I really enjoyed the first half of this book.. the second half was also great, don't get me wrong, but also pretty confusing 😅 I had to read a few Reddit posts to aid with the confusion but even they had unanswered questions. I think Nevill wanted to leave us feeling confused which he did brilliantly. 🤯📖

"A mind made strange with inebriation in oppressive darkness could see anything it wanted"

Catherine is at the late M. H. Mason's Red House cataloging his extensive collection of rare dolls, puppets, and taxidermy. From the opening chapter she feels weird about the place. Are the dolls looking at her? I know Nevill isn't everyone's cup-of-scream but I am enjoying this one more than others I have tried.

The House of Small Shadows, by Adam Nevill, is one of those horror novels that has the ability to easily get under my skin. It just tends to constantly leave you feeling like there's something off in what's happening to the main character, giving you these little goosebumps that won't go away. I talked more about the book in a recent blog post: https://bit.ly/2CZJknm.

I didn't like this one as much as some of the other Nevill I've read. It was a bit predictable. But it was still adequately creepy, especially if dolls and puppets freak you out!

I love a good haunted house book but I had to abandon this one. The storyline was just weird, with the constant flipping back and forth. Not to mention the childishness of the main character. I couldn't choke down the rest. Sorry.

It's #recommendsday ! For all of us who love to be scared...add this gem to your TBR tower. Or anything by Adam Nevill, really. This one is modern gothic, isolated village, and super creepy taxidermy. 😳😱 Pushed all my horror buttons. Enjoy!

BibliophileMomma What a creepy cover. 😱 8y

Mostly interesting reading in the first half of the book but the ending was disappointing
