Are you a fan of vampire movies? Strange Blood, edited by Vanessa Morgan, looks at 71 films in the genre, produced across ninety decades and 23 countries. It's definitely a book to check out if you're either looking for something new to watch, or if you just want to read up on something you're already into. For more info: https://bit.ly/33o4JSa

If you love books, then you should definitely check out Dear Fahrenheit 451, by Annie Spence. Half of it's filled with letters to books—some funny, some sad, some heartfelt—and the other half with book recommendations and other advice straight from a librarian. It's worth adding to any book-lover's to-read list. https://bit.ly/2TL1n9C

If you write any sort of speculative fiction, you should definitely check out Writing Monsters, by Philip Athans. Not only does it talk about how to, well, write monsters, it provides some great examples from both novels and movies, as well as a monster creation form to help bring your own monster to life.

The House of Small Shadows, by Adam Nevill, is one of those horror novels that has the ability to easily get under my skin. It just tends to constantly leave you feeling like there's something off in what's happening to the main character, giving you these little goosebumps that won't go away. I talked more about the book in a recent blog post: https://bit.ly/2CZJknm.

I really enjoyed Celeste Ng's Little Fires Everywhere, particularly the contrast between the Warrens and the Richardsons. The characters were easily my favourite part of the novel. I wrote about that a bit over on my blog today. I loved everything about Gail Carriger's Soulless, from its premise to its main character. A paranormal romance set in Victorian London, the novel does a wonderful job of balancing its historical setting with vampires, werewolves, and a good dose of sass. #WhatToRead #booklover #bookish #booknerd #bookaddict #bookaholic #bookphotography #bibliophile #booklove #paranormal #romance #fantasy #historicalfiction

I rarely borrow books from other people. But sometimes, someone will insist on it--like Big Magic, by Elizabeth Gilbert. I'm glad that the friend who lent me this one did so. I loved this book, & it was one that I needed to read. It's motivating, well-written, & helps to lull a creative person's fears. #WhatToRead #booklover #bookish #booknerd #bookaddict #bookaholic #bookphotography #bibliophile #booklove #nonfiction #creativity #writing

There's a reason Stephen King's On Writing: A Memoir of the Craft has such a high average rating. Part memoir, part informational text, this book should be added to the to-read list of readers and writers alike.

If you're looking for an eerie, gripping read, you'll want to give Clowders, by Vanessa Morgan, a try. It's the type of horror novel that had me picturing its scenes as though I was watching a horror movie--& that doesn't happen very often. Plus, I loved Morgan's descriptions of the setting. Harry Potter: fun book | J.K. Rowling
post image
Pickpick

Over on Instagram, I answered a prompt asking when & why I started writing. The short answer: When I was in my preteens/early teens (can't remember exactly when) because of the Harry Potter series. I wanted to do for others what JK Rowling did for me: Provide a warmth around someone's heart that nothing but a good book can elicit, one that comes from a unique combo of magic, wonder & familiarity.

If you're you're craving a tense, thrilling, at least somewhat-scary type of book right now, then you'll definitely want to add Bait, by J. Kent Messum, to your list. There's a lot to love in this novel, but my favourite aspect is the way Messum is able to get the reader to sympathize with his characters. #WhatToRead #booklover #thriller #adultfiction

The education of Augie Merasty is a heavier read, but it's also a great one. It's short, but it paints a clear picture of what at least some Canadian residential school children exoerienced in the 1930s and 1940s. #Nonfiction #Canadian
