Ministry of Moral Panic
Ministry of Moral Panic | Amanda Lee Koe
Winner of Best Fiction Title for Singapore Book Awards 2016 Winner of the Singapore Literature Prize for Fiction 2014 Longlisted for the Frank OConnor International Short Story Award 2014 Selected by The Business Times as one of the Top 10 English Singapore books from 19652015 Meet an over-the-hill Pop Y-y singer with a faulty heart, two conservative middle-aged women holding hands in the Galpagos, and the proprietor of a Laundromat with a penchant for Cantonese songs of heartbreak. Rehash national icons: the truth about racial riot fodder-girl Maria Hertogh living out her days as a chambermaid in Lake Tahoe, a mirage of the Merlion as a ladyboy working Orchard Towers, and a high-stakes fantasy starring the still-suave lead of the 1990s TV hit serial The Unbeatables. Heartfelt and sexy, the stories of Amanda Lee Koe encompass a skewed world fraught with prestige anxiety, moral relativism, sexual frankness, and the improbable necessity of human connection. Told in strikingly original prose, these are fictions that plough, relentlessly, the possibilities of understanding Singapore and her denizens discursively, off-centre. Ministry of Moral Panic is an extraordinary debut collection and the introduction of a revelatory new voice.

A topic about Asian diaspora for Asian heritage month had me thinking about how Singaporeans are Asian diaspora too, although Singapore is located in Asia. For instance, my great-grandparents migrated from China to Singapore and while I may still have distant relatives in China, I haven‘t been there and have no plans to. Anyway, just highlighting some Singapore lit from shelves today.

BarbaraBB Interesting! 2y
Jeg Singapore, one of my favourite places to visit. Hoping to get there when we are travelling again. We were booked to go and covid happened. 2y

#RedRoseSeptember Day 13: I found myself drawn to practically all the stories in this collection, Ministry of Moral #Panic from Singapore. While there was that studied restraint in the writing, I felt that Koe was boldly reshaping boundaries in her narratives, pushing and pulling into issues otherwise perceived to be too controversial to be articulated – be it maid-employer dalliances and same-sex relationships. My review: https://wp.me/pDlzr-arX

Cinfhen Great photo 5y
GatheringBooks @Cinfhen very interesting that in this photo of my book club in my previous institution, all four of us have left. The two gentlemen scholars are now affiliated with UCL in London, my mentor has retired and now living in France, and I am now in the United Arab Emirates. To think this photo was only taken four years ago. 5y
Cinfhen Wow, what do you attribute all the movement too?Financial or academic ? 5y
arlenefinnigan Love the cover! 5y
GatheringBooks @Cinfhen definitely not financial. Singapore takes very good care of its teachers and professors financially. But the stress level is off the roof and work-life balance is practically nil. 5y

#anditsaugust day 31: #bestofaugust

I didn't read as many books in August as in July - prob because of returning from Singapore and all that jetlag (more of helping the kids get over theirs!). But I did read some amazing books.
Ministry of Moral Panic - excellent short stories by a Singaporean
Everything We Lost - surprising coming-of-age
Packing for Mars - Mary Roach is always awesome
Court of Mist and Fury - sooooo gooooooood!!!!!

LA_Mead In totally on team Rhysand now that I'm reading Court of Mist and Fury. (I haven't finished it yet though, so that might change). 7y

#anditsaugust day 9: #quickreads
Short story collections are usually slow reads for me but this one I just keep reading, story after story. I love the writing and its Singapore flavour.
And also this very Singapore breakfast - teh C siu dai (milk tea, less sugar), soft-boiled eggs and (not pictured) kaya toast

Oder: Irgendwie kommen Kurzgeschichten wirklich am besten auf den Punkt.
