Well I'm definitely looking forward to reading these two books I bought from the Books Actually store. They are both Singaporean writers and I'm always so happy to see more #singlit

Well. I want to like this book very badly. And, for the most part, I do. I think it's much better organized than Inheritance. There is a purposefulness (is that a word? hah) to the way the themes are explored. But I can't get over the way the word "Singapore" keeps appearing everywhere. On page 70 alone, it appears 5 times. It's reaaaaally bugging me. #singlit

GatheringBooks precisely my issue, but i promise it gets better. 7y

Pickpick

My #singlit read over the weekend. While the first part tried too hard to establish the sense of place (too many needless "this is singapore" references), the book gradually came into its own with a distinct, graceful voice that seems to have seen a lot and felt a great deal and painted beautifully here with a thoughtful revelation of emotions through meals painstakingly prepared to capture defiance, relief, euphoria. Hence, the sponge cake. :)

Chachic #bookanddessert shot! 👍 Adding this one to my wishlist. 7y
RealLifeReading I'm going to tag @magictoyshop in this one as she was reading 7y
BookishMe Do you know where the ticket books for commuters are sold? I posted same query on Singlit FB but no reply 7y

magictoyshop @RealLifeReading this is on my tbr 😁 7y
GatheringBooks @RealLifeReading I heard that this one is even better than Inheritance which I have not yet read. @BookishMe I have no idea what the ticket books are! You're way ahead of me on that score. @magictoyshop how are you finding Inheritance, thus far? 7y
magictoyshop @GatheringBooks I think it's safe to say that I kind of hero-worship Jaswal because she writes about the Singaporean Sikh identity, which I've never encountered in print before and which resonates close to my own heart and sense of identity. So my praise is rather effusive... I liked it very , very much. 7y
GatheringBooks @magictoyshop very glad to hear that. now i must get myself a copy of Inheritance soonest. :) 7y
magictoyshop @GatheringBooks how about her deliciously titled "Erotic Stories for Punjabi Widows"? Can't wait to get my hands on that. Heard she's sold the movie rights, too! The excitement is real!! 7y
GatheringBooks @magictoyshop i kind of picked up on the hoopla too about movie rights etc. i will have to get that too! Jaswal moderated quite a number of sessions for the recently concluded singapore writers festival. she was a lovely moderator who allowed space for her speakers to share their thoughts. i also liked the format she used in all of the panel sessions she moderated. thoughtful and considerate and structured. Published, authored and designed in Singapore, these Math Paper Press books have gorgeous covers. I'm looking forward to reading them! Have any of you read these books? Would be interested in hearing what you think of them. #SingLit

Chachic @RealLifeReading Wonder if you've read any of these? 😄 7y
GatheringBooks i received island in the caldera as a gift from my students - along with resident tourist. looking forward to reading them. havent visited books actually for a long while now. 7y
Chachic @GatheringBooks I'm pretty excited to try these since I've never read any book written by a Singaporean author, and these are the ones that seemed to fall under genres I read. 7y

Bookish.Heart Oh those covers are wonderful 7y
BookishMe Yes... Such vibrant covers! 7y
RealLifeReading Not yet! And I don't remember seeing them the last time I was at Books Actually. Then again that was last July 😂😂 Definitely will be heading back to Books Actually during my next visit to Sg. Will keep an eye out for these! 7y
Chachic @Bookish.Heart @BookishMe These covers are so pretty! I have to admit that was partly the reason why I chose them.😁 7y
BookishMe Will look out for these next time I pop by BA 7y
Chachic @RealLifeReading They were all piled up in one corner of the store! Where all the Math Paper Press books are. I'm planning to read and review these soon and I'm hoping they're going to be good.😊 7y
Chachic @BookishMe Oh see my comment above ☝☝☝ 7y
BookishMe Thanks! 7y
Chachic @BookishMe Hope you find some good ones.😀 7y
Jokila They're beautiful! 7y

I had a nerve-wracking morning so I treated myself to a trip to the bookstore and a single origin flat white this afternoon. Thank you, @booksactually for these SingLit titles! Review copies always feel like such a treat. I said I didn't want to get too many copies because I wasn't sure when I'd be able to read and review them, but all of these looked great and I'm excited to read them! 📖📚 #SingLit

GatheringBooks review titles! awesome! freebies! :) 7y
Chachic @GatheringBooks IKR? Always a good thing.🙌📚 7y
GatheringBooks @Chachic given how much we also spend on purchasing books, we do consider this our little pleasures. math paper press at one point sponsored 12 copies of alfian sa'at's malay sketches for my book club. that was truly generous. they do hound you though for the reviews. :) 7y

Chachic @GatheringBooks It's like receiving a gift every time.😊 Wow, that is pretty generous! I did ask about time lines and they said I can post after 30 to 60 days, and I also asked if Litsy reviews are okay and they said yes. I think that's quite manageable? 7y
GatheringBooks @Chachic litsy review sounds like a fair and manageable deal :) have fun with your new reads! 7y
Chachic @GatheringBooks Diba? Buti na lang that's an option! A lot easier to commit to something like that than a full-length blog review.😊 7y
GatheringBooks @Chachic that is why i stopped taking reviews from publishers - can't commit to doing full-length reviews. book distributor route is great, i find. greater flexibility. ;) 7y
Chachic @GatheringBooks Really?? How so? 7y
GatheringBooks @Chachic will share when we see each other during the book club. more chika to save. 7y

So I decided that 2017 will be the year I actively seek out and read more literature by Singaporean authors. Inheritance, which I bought and read last month, was a pretty perfect start to this journey.

RealLifeReading Ooh that's a nice cover. I have the other version that looks like HDB flats 7y
