Lailah's Lunchbox
Lailah's Lunchbox | Reem Faruqi
4 posts | 6 read | 7 to read
Lailah is in a new school in a new country, thousands of miles from her old home, and missing her old friends. When Ramadan begins, she is excited that she is finally old enough to participate in the fasting but worried that her classmates won't understand why she doesn't join them in the lunchroom. Lailah solves her problem with help from the school librarian and her teacher and in doing so learns that she can make new friends who respect her beliefs. This gentle, moving story from first-time author Reem Faruqi comes to life in Lea Lyon's vibrant illustrations. Lyon uses decorative arabesque borders on intermittent spreads to contrast the ordered patterns of Islamic observances with the unbounded rhythms of American school days.

A very simple intro to Ramadan. Though this is an illustrated story, it‘s not meant for very young readers. Each page has too much text for a typical picture book audience, & the main character‘s age isn‘t specified, but from the images & the fact that this is her first year fasting, we can assume she‘s 9-12. This is the story of a girl who‘s new to the US, & is scared to tell her teachers she‘s fasting. Luckily they turn out to be great!

Today is the birthday of a wonderful Librarian named Tiffany. She passed away at the end of February. She was always so wonderful to me. This was the last interaction I had with her was this book. I feel so terrible it took till today for me to realize she passed.

josie281 What a gift she must have been! 7y

Lailah is missing her friends after her move from Abu Dhabi to Georgia, especially when she learns she will get to fast for the first time during Ramadan. She's in a new school with classmates and teachers who don't celebrate Ramadan.

Lailah finds a way to express herself through writing, and finds a supportive teacher and librarian.

Great story for grade schoolers, and includes an author's note.
