Young People's History of the United States: Columbus to the War on Terror
Young People's History of the United States: Columbus to the War on Terror | Howard Zinn
8 posts | 1 read | 1 reading | 9 to read
A Young People's History of the United States brings to US history the viewpoints of workers, slaves, immigrants, women, Native Americans, and others whose stories, and their impact, are rarely included in books for young people. A Young People's History of the United States is also a companion volume to The People Speak, the film adapted from A People's History of the United States and Voices of a People s History of the United States.Beginning with a look at Christopher Columbus s arrival through the eyes of the Arawak Indians, then leading the reader through the struggles for workers rights, women s rights, and civil rights during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, and ending with the current protests against continued American imperialism, Zinn in the volumes of A Young People s History of the United States presents a radical new way of understanding America s history. In so doing, he reminds readers that America s true greatness is shaped by our dissident voices, not our military generals."

Since the boys enjoy the D‘aulaires Greek book, I also picked up the Norse myths. I‘m looking forward to reading A Young People‘s History of the United States with the boys. Any other Littens share any of these with your kids or students?

Arawak men and women came out of their villages onto the beaches. Full of wonder, they swam out to to get a closer look at the strange big boat. #thanksgiving #realstories #truth

JamieArc I‘m currently reading his Memoir (tagged). It‘s a hope-giving book (and full of stories we should know). 6y
Lesliereads @JamieArc thank you for the recommendation-it doesn‘t hurt that memoir has become a favorite genre for me in recent years.😍 6y

Spent the afternoon picking out our historical fiction for the next two months to go along with our Howard Zinn text. So excited to read another Christopher Paul Curtis, and a book in VERSE read by BAHNI TURPIN! 😍

TheWordJar These look like great books! I've got The Watsons go to Birmingham coming up for a read aloud, and my daughter and I will be reading Chains this year. One of my favorite parts of homeschooling...more time for so many good books! 7y
HippieChickHomeschool @TheWordJar The Watsons go to Birmingham was great!! (We watched the movie on Netflix and it was pretty terrible) One thing I can guarantee with homeschooling, they will graduate well read! 😉 7y
