Why Weren't We Told?
Why Weren't We Told?: A Personal Search for the Truth about Our History | Henry Reynolds
3 posts | 2 read | 3 to read
Historian Henry Reynolds has found himself being asked these questions by many people, over many years, in all parts of Australia. The acclaimed Why Weren't We Told? is a frank account of his personal journal towards the realisation that he, like generations of Australians, grew up with a distorted and idealised version of the past. From the author's unforgettable encounter in a North Queensland jail with injustice towards Aboriginal children, to his friendship with Eddi Mabo, to his shattering of the myths about our 'peaceful' history, this bestselling book will shock, move and intrigue. Why Weren't We Told? is crucial reading on the most important debate in Australia as we enter the twenty-first century.

.The personal nature of the narrative building here makes these stories real, and this history accessible. Although it‘s not the most up to date text, Reynolds ideas about colonisation, race relations, remembering, and shame are still painfully current both in an Australian context and in broader colonial contexts. This is an excellent text which asks some of the big questions of colonial History. I loved it.

@Jeg look what I got for you from a teeny op shop in Balingup! It‘s slightly damaged but in pretty good nick. I hope you will read it, appreciate it & perhaps pass it on or put it in a Little Free Library.

I was going to bring my beloved copy to Book Club for you to borrow, but now I‘ll bring this 😊.

Jeg Wonderful. I look forward to reading it. Thank you.😍😍 4y
