Pete the Cat is back in Pete the Cat and the New Guy by New York Times bestselling authors James and Kimberly Dean. There's a new guy in town, and Pete can't wait to meet him. After all, more friends mean more fun. But who can he be? When Pete finally meets Gus, he realizes they're very different from each other . . . but that's what makes him cool. Gus is special in his own way, just like Pete and just like you, and there is something everyone can do! The message of acceptance shines through and is perfect for young readers learning to navigate the social waters. Fans of Pete the Cat will delight in the rhythmic storytelling and fun repetition throughout the book.

Loved this RF by Kimberly and James Dean that promotes friendship and encourages individuals to pursue their passion. This book is about a cat named Pete and his encounter with a new individual that moves into his neighborhood. After he discovers who the individual is, he helps his new friend try to discover a skill that he is good at. It is a journey which involves friendship, encouragement, and love.

fquadri This book is very good for a RA as it allows students to think while they read the book by answering questions that the teacher might pose, make predictions based on the illustrations, and make connections from the text.

After the read aloud, students can talk amongst themselves and discuss the book.

fquadri This means that EL strategy 2 can be incorporated in this lesson plan. UDL strategy 3.3 (guide information processing and visualization) can be used because during the read aloud, students will be using visuals like the illustrations in the book to come up with conclusions. 5y

DrSpalding Yes to reading aloud and even singing aloud Pete the cat books however they are not considered realistic fiction. Why not? Look at the front cover of your book… We have a blue cat riding a skateboard. Is that realistic? What genre do you think it is now? 5y

“Pete said, don‘t be sad, don‘t be blue. There is something everyone can do!”
I was helping a student read this today, and at the end he threw his head back and said, “I wish Pete the Cat was MY best friend! He would be nice to me EVERY day....not like Savannah.” These kids slay me 😄
