Last Stop on Market Street | Matt de la Peña

Pickpick

This RF by Matt de la Pena has won the Newbery Medal, a Coretta Scott King Honor, and a Caldecott Honor award. It is about a kid and his grandmother who go on a journey to a soup kitchen but it requires a lot of thinking and therefore it would be suitable for a RA.

fquadri EL strategy 44 can be used and UDL strategy 3.2 can be used as these both facilitate thinking.

A Light in the Attic | Shel Silverstein

Pickpick

This P is a collection of poems by the poet Shel Silverstein. This book is very interactive and students will have to use their imagination and creative thinking skills to decode the meaning of the poems written in this book. Students can use IR for this because it involves a lot of heavy thinking. They can have group discussions after reading poems individually.

fquadri EL strategy 10 and UDL strategy 2.4 can be used so that students have the opportunity to engage in group discussion and share their ideas.
This video gives students 3 poems from the book that can be interpreted using their own thinking skills.

The Snowy Day is a RF book by Ezra Jack Keats and it is about a boy named Peter exploring his neighborhood which is covered with snow. The book is filled with fabulous illustrations and higher level vocabulary which would be good for PR so that students can have discussions after reading the book.

Bshelton27 I think the video you shared was great to add to this book. I think that we often spend a lot of time trying to make accommodations to text for different languages that hearing/speaking disabilities is put on the back burner a little bit. 5y
DrSpalding This is an excellent book to incorporate into a science lesson. The images are beautiful and as you noted, award-winning. You still need to elaborate more on your principles and strategies. 5y

If You Give a Dog a Donut | Laura Numeroff

This MF by Laura Numeroff is about a dog and his adventures when given a donut and apple juice. It is a fun book that can be used with S because of how interactive it is. An EL streategy that can be used with this book would be 15 because there is a lot of repetition in the book and a UDL strategy would be 1.1 because the teacher can use props like stuffed animals and such.

This SF by Ron Roy is about friends and the adventures they go on to find the missing mummy in a museum in Connecticut. These friends go through many obstacles but they learn to tackle them and so the themes hard work and growth are highlighted in this book.

fquadri This book can be used for a RA. The teacher can read a chapter of the book a day for the students because the chapters are not that long. EL strategy 44 can be used for this book because it is very mysterious and requires observations and predictions. UDL strategy 2.3 can be used for this book because it has a lot of words that need decoding. 5y

The Polar Express | Chris Van Allsburg

The Polar Express is one of my favorite books, written and illustrated by Chris Van Allsburg. This book is a MF and its central themes focus around hope and kindness. It is about a boy who does not believe in Christmas until he embarks on a magical journey to the North Pole on the Polar Express train.

fquadri S can be used for this book because of the difference props that can be incorporated such as a toy train or hot chocolate for students to be engaged and make learning enjoyable. This journey teaches the boy many things including patience and positivity. This book received the Caldecott Medal in 1986. 5y
fquadri
EL strategy 3 can be used for this book to encourage students to relate to the main character of the book and how positive thinking can lead to good things. UDL strategy 5.1 can be used with this book because there was a movie made on this book and so after students read this book, teachers can show the movie and this will make learning exciting.

This MF written and illustrated by Chris Van Allsburg is a good read for children that enjoy suspense and adventure. This book teaches children to always read the instructions and follow rules because not doing so can lead to consequences. In the story, the main characters are siblings who find a magical board and decide to play without reading the instructions which leads them to magically being a part of the game as the game comes to life.

fquadri This book won the Caldecott Medal and is good for PR.
EL strategy 46 can be incorporated with this book and UDL strategy 5.2 can be used so that children can get hands on with completing activities pertaining to the book. This website provides us with exciting lessons and activities that can be used with this book. https://www.teachervision.com/adventure/jumanji-teachers-guide

Estradan I honestly didn‘t know Jumanji was a book until this class. Including a hands on activity like having a game board out could be a cool way to introduce the book. 5y
DrSpalding Great activity! Many students, like some of your peers, do not know that the movies came from quality children‘s literature. This is something your students should know. You now have two VanAllsburg books in your posts. Creating an author study for a third or fourth grade class would be a wise choice as well. 5y

The Rainbow Fish | Marcus Pfister

I really enjoyed reading this MF about a beautiful rainbow fish that discovers happiness through sharing and being kind to others. This book has a very good message about the power of being kind and that being rude does not get one anywhere. This book is good for S because props can be incorporated while reading the book so help students be drawn to the book and be focused.

fquadri EL strategy 4 can be used to ask students questions on what they know about sharing and kindness and make connections to their personal experiences. UDL strategy 2.5 can be used for this book because the teacher can use media to facilitate the lesson.
This website offers a read aloud by the well known Hollywood actor Ernest Borgnine.

fquadri He reads the book with great expression which can capture the attention of youngsters because it feels like they are watching a movie. The read aloud has no words but it shows the audience pictures of the book, while the actor narrates the text to them.

Rules | Cynthia Lord

I really enjoyed reading this RF called Rules. This book has won many awards such as the Newberry Honor and Sunshine State Young Readers award. This book is about a girl named Catherine and her struggles as she has to take care of and defend her brother David from rude individuals, as her brother has autism.

fquadri It is a struggle for Catherine to go on her day to day life and also deal with her brother who she loves and wants to help so she creates a set of rules that can help her brother fit in society. This book is about love and patience and is quite a rollercoaster but I loved every bit of it. IR can be assigned for this book as it is a book that contains many lessons and homework assignments can be assigned after IR. 5y
fquadri EL strategy 15 can be used for this book by reinforcing a common idea that is reoccurring throughout the book such as patience. UDL strategy 2.4 can be used so that it is easier for ELs to understand the main idea of the book.

I really enjoyed reading the HF called Bud, Not Buddy. This book is very inspirational and leaves readers with a great message to never give up no matter the circumstances. Loved this RF by Mem Fox and Leslie Staub that promotes diversity and acceptance of others no matter who they are. This book is good for PR because students can read together and share their thoughts about the book after they read. Students can talk about their similarities and differences just like shown in the book.

fquadri After conducting the read aloud, teachers can ask students to complete activities pertaining to the book. EL strategy 45 would be fit for this book because it has to do with filling out a Venn diagram that compares and contrasts something. In this case, students can compare themselves and a partner. 5y
fquadri They can compare and contrast their likes and dislikes and heritage. UDL strategy 1.1 can be used because we are using Venn diagrams to customize the display of information.

After he discovers who the individual is, he helps his new friend try to discover a skill that he is good at. It is a journey which involves friendship, encouragement, and love.

After the read aloud, students can talk amongst themselves and discuss the book.
