Lie back and think of England... England, 1904. Two years ago, Captain Archie Curtis lost his friends, fingers, and future to a terrible military accident. Alone, purposeless and angry, Curtis is determined to discover if he and his comrades were the victims of fate, or of sabotage. Curtiss search takes him to an isolated, ultra-modern country house, where he meets and instantly clashes with fellow guest Daniel da Silva. Effete, decadent, foreign, and all-too-obviously queer, the sophisticated poet is everything the straightforward British officer fears and distrusts. As events unfold, Curtis realizes that Daniel has his own secret intentions. And theres something else they sharea mounting sexual tension that leaves Curtis reeling. As the house partys elegant facade cracks to reveal treachery, blackmail and murder, Curtis finds himself needing clever, dark-eyed Daniel as he has never needed a man before... Warning: Contains explicit male/male encounters, ghastly historical attitudes, and some extremely stiff upper lips.

I could just read this through all in one go... 🤔

Hulk certainly wants me to keep hanging out with her! It's been a while since she had freedom cause she started chewing carpets, but now we set her up in the kitchen every other day (alternating with the other two). My butt doesn't appreciate sitting here but Hulk seems so happy to hang out, it's so worth it. #bunniesoflitsy

rabbitprincess She looks so stern! « Yes, you WILL hang out with me and read » ♥️ 5y
shanaqui @rabbitprincess She was fast asleep except for when she decided to climb into my lap and give the ereader a good snuffling. 😂 5y

I was pretty durned leery of this book going in, not least because of the awful (if historically accurate) opinions the hero spouts in the opening chapters, but in the end I loved it. It's an intense country house mystery that ups the stakes with every chapter, and Curtis does reject his worst stances as he grows more comfortable with his own identity.

Be aware there's some dubcon of the "we must have sex to preserve our cover; don't argue" kind.

Breakfast involved a bleu cheese & olive omelette, a caramel latte, and what I'm pretty sure will be the last book in my KJ Charles-a-thon. (I want to save Sins of the City a bit longer.) Honestly, I'm a bit leery of THINK OF ENGLAND because I know Charles got credibly called out for something in it but I can't remember WHAT. We'll see how it goes. So far, there are certainly a lot of the ghastly historical attitudes mentioned in the blurb.

“Then lie back and think of England.” 1904 country house party with spies, intrigue, & literary references. This almost made it worth suffering through King Solomon‘s Mines. A wounded war hero & a Jewish secret agent. Fabulous! ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ #romantsy

You know how you hear a book being hyped so much you assume it can't possibly live up to it? Not the case here. I loved this book.

Finished in a night because the initial chapters were so compelling. Archie and Daniel have far more dividing them than class - religion and good, old-fashioned British upper-class xenophobia/bigotry come into play, too. Charles really gets into the mental gymnastics Archie goes through to "come out of the closet" just to himself (less than a decade after Oscar Wilde's arrest/prison term - Archie is very Victorian compared to Daniel's Modern).

balletbookworm The book is told entirely from Archie's perspective, so I would have liked to get into Daniel's head much more than we did (he has a great line, about how no one ever got arrested for camp, which I particularly liked). I would also have liked to know a bit more about Pat and Fen, who were a nice addition to the book. 8y

Love! The romance is set within a tale of blackmail, treason, and secrets. Outstanding!

Never been much of a romance reader, and I've never read a gay romance. What a pleasant, fun, sexy surprise!

This was so good! And now I want more romance in Downtown Abbey- like settings.
