How Star Wars Conquered the Universe
How Star Wars Conquered the Universe: The Past, Present, and Future of a Multibillion Dollar Franchise | Chris Taylor
In 1973, a young filmmaker named George Lucas scribbled some notes for a far-fetched space-fantasy epic. Some forty years and $37 billion later, Star Warsrelated products outnumber human beings, a growing stormtrooper army spans the globe, and Jediism has become a religion in its own right. Lucass creation has grown into far more than a cinematic classic; it is, quite simply, one of the most lucrative, influential, and interactive franchises of all time. Yet incredibly, until now the complete history of Star Warsits influences and impact, the controversies it has spawned, its financial growth and long-term prospectshas never been told. In How Star Wars Conquered the Universe, veteran journalist Chris Taylor traces the series from the difficult birth of the original film through its sequels, the franchises death and rebirth, the prequels, and the preparations for a new trilogy. Providing portraits of the friends, writers, artists, producers, and marketers who labored behind the scenes to turn Lucass idea into a legend, Taylor also jousts with modern-day Jedi, tinkers with droid builders, and gets inside Boba Fetts helmet, all to find out how Star Wars has attracted and inspired so many fans for so long. Since the first films release in 1977, Taylor shows, Star Wars has conquered our culture with a sense of lightness and exuberance, while remaining serious enough to influence politics in far-flung countries and spread a spirituality that appeals to religious groups and atheists alike. Controversial digital upgrades and poorly received prequels have actually made the franchise stronger than ever. Now, with a savvy new set of bosses holding the reins and Episode VII on the horizon, it looks like Star Wars is just getting started. An energetic, fast-moving account of this creative and commercial phenomenon, How Star Wars Conquered the Universe explains how a young filmmakers fragile dream beat out a surprising number of rivals to gain a diehard, multigenerational fan baseand why it will be galvanizing our imaginations and minting money for generations to come.

I was hesitant to start this because it was so long and I couldn't imagine how it could stay interesting. It is great! It covers everything about Star Wars in fascinating detail and gives great backstory to George Lucas. It even encouraged me to watch Lucas' older films. It ends when Disney purchases Lucasfilm, so it tells a really great story about Lucas' involvement in the franchise.

At 20 hours, I think that it's the longest one I've ever read via audiobook. Full disclosure: my family and I are massive Star Wars fans. Many times I'd find myself texting my husband after I'd stopped driving (mostly listened in the car) with some random fact I'd learned. For SW fans, there's a lot of detail and interesting stories in this book.

This is my FAVORITE day of the #OctPhotoChallenge. It's STAR WARS day! My pic is highlighting the Force Awakens characters. But I love them all. I even have a soft spot for Jar Jar Binks. He's no ewok but still lovable. #starwars

Suetara This is my current audiobook. Really enjoying it so far. ❤️Star Wars! 8y
Godmotherx5 I love Jar Jar, too. My husband & I play-fight about him all of the time. 8y
LibrarianRyan @Godmotherx5 my guy is only recently indoctrinated. I can not bring myself to show him the Qui con gin movies yet. 8y
Godmotherx5 @LibrarianRyan Definitely let the other movies sink in first. I hope he likes the movies so far. 8y

I had the misfortune of deciding I was sick of Star Wars just after starting this book. I guess it delivered the death blow when it kept cramming in movie quotes that just made me roll my eyes rather than delight me. So I sort of hated listening to it while also wanting to finish it. There were a few annoying factual errors that bugged me and it's all a bit surface-y, but it's a good primer for a casual fan.

Didn't feel like listening to a podcast this morning, so I started this audiobook instead. I'm a big Star Wars fan but also love books about how pop culture phenomena originated. So, this rings several of my reading bells

Required reading for anyone who saw 'The Force Awakens' opening day (or before). For everyone else, this is an in-depth, excellently written, fascinating exploration of the world's largest franchise. Deftly maneuvering between tales of modern fandom & the origins of Lucas & the Star Wars story.
