The start and end where very strong, the middle got a little weird with the plot but that's normal for Ron Currie. Jr. Interesting characters, which is what I would Ron is so good at. Worth reading, if you've read other books by Ron, you should read it.

The results of the “blind date”! 😃

Reggie I love Ron Currie but he always takes a left turn somewhere, but then gets back on track. 6y

I loved the first two sections of the book, the last section kind of left something to be desired.

John Thibodeux, from his existence in the womb, through a recurring, all knowing "other" voice, has known that the world will end in 36 years. Told in multiple POVs, Currie draws these outlines of characters fully shading them in as he strings them together to show the importance of living life even if you know everything will end someday. Despite a few scenes that didn't belong in here, there were great family dynamics that made this a pick.

Slightly mixed feeling about this one but I would recommend it. I absolutely loved the writing and various perspectives. Really nice use of the second-person POV. . The characters were nuanced, interesting, complex people that I wanted to follow no matter what. Plot: loved the first section, liked the second, really not enthused about the last. It just didn't gel perfectly for me but was a wonderful book overall and I highly recommend it.

ValerieAndBooks I'll keep my eyes open for this one! 7y

Savoring this book and enjoying every bit of it. Beautifully written, fully realized characters, with a really interesting point-of-view. Looking forward to diving in more with my coffee.

Zelma It's just fast food, but the upper echelon of fast food. Excellent shakes and drink flavor combos. 😂 it just happens to be the only place open somewhat late in my small town. And I have a slight problem with their custards, which are new. @AprilMaesBookHabit (edited) 7y
Zelma @Jinjer I do love a good chili cheese dog. 👍 7y

Read this book!📚
It's inventive in its technique.
It keeps you flipping pages.
It has the most omniscient narrators ever.
It has the best dad ever.
You fall in love with each character, & through them, with life, love, & the experiences we all share.
And it predicted a Cubs/Indians WS!😱
If you liked Dark Matter by Blake Crouch, give this a try - I'm pretty sure you'll love it, too.

BooksForEmpathy I agree. I loved this book and the ending was just 💥. 8y
Sweettartlaura @BooksForEmpathy We had a big discussion at Book Club about which ending was better. It was split. 8y

This book was sad and a little depressing. It did not hold my interest through most of it. The beginning was amazing and so was the last 5th or so, but the middle was a desert for me. His other book, "God is dead", was so good I still think about it years after reading it.

Every single one of these books ended with tears streaming down my face, followed by a huge sigh and lots of contemplation. I love feeling absolutely wrecked after a book. Yes, I cry when I have to leave beloved characters behind or when situations feel so unfair/overwhelming/heartbreaking, but the best cry is when a book seems to just "get" you and you believe for a second the author wrote it just for you. So you could know you're not alone ?.

BooksForEmpathy PS - what makes YOU cry during/after books!??? I'm so curious. 8y
AlwaysBeReading The Song of Achilles was SO good! If you like books with emotion I highly recommend The Art of Hearing Heartbeats ! 8y

ApoptyGina69 For me it's almost more often for the happy times. Sometimes the death and destruction make me want to fling the book away, like how dare they? But when the love is realized, or they see each other again finally, etc. that's when I really lose it. 8y
ApoptyGina69 Also, Everything Matters reminds me of the Depeche Mode '80s song lyric "everything counts in large amounts". A huge influence and mantra for my teenage self. 8y
akfreeborn All My Puny Sorrows just took it out of me. Loved it but boy did I cry over that one! 8y
ReadingEnvy The Toews sneaks up on you too. At first it seems like a light read. 8y
mauveandrosysky Yes, exactly 8y
Reagan A few that have made me cry - We Need To Talk About Kevin, The Light Between Oceans, The Storied Life of AJ Fikry, The Enchanted. 8y

Every page of this = loved by me. Brilliant writer alert. I want all of my hip/cool/literary/scifi friends to read this, and love it as much as I do. In the face of an impending doom, Ron Currie creates a story that explores what it takes to trust the people you care about most in life. This is a world filled with baseball, love, comets, science, drugs, and more. Great dialogue, fresh descriptions, and just oh so good.
