Blending poetry, fiction, history, and myth, a glorious new spin on a classic story is set in Londinium, Britannia, A.D. 211 and follows Zuleika, who is forced to marry a rich Roman senator at the age of eleven, as she, several years after their marriage, embarks on a torrid affair with visiting Roman emperor Septimus Severus. Reprint. 15,000 first printing.

Evaristo is imagining life in London AD 211. Zuleika is married off at 11 yrs to man 3 times her age. Her husband spends most of his time in Rome, so we see what life is like for Zuleika, managing servants and hanging with friends.

At the beginning there several pages of acclaims and several mentions that they hope for many readers. I hope that with Evaristo winning the Booker prize, more people just like me will discover her amazing backlist.

A brash bawdy romp, this is basically a “Carry On Cleo“ type of mixture of Roman stereotypes with knowing winks to the audience through references to modern place names in and around London and modern fashions. The cover gives the game away with Zuleika sporting a heart shaped tattoo enclosing the words “SEV IV ME“. I loved it, but those who take their historical fiction seriously will hate it.

I really wanted to read this story. But I really didn‘t want to read it in verse. I‘ve realised I can read challenging stories and subjects, but I struggle with challenging writing and I did find this challenging. Although it‘s testament to Bernadine Evaristo‘s clearly amazing writing that I willingly took on the challenge and finished this! I loved Girl, Woman, Other and will read more Bernadine Evaristo... (also love, love, love the cover)

Kalalalatja The cover is awesome, but I get you about challenging writing. It can make a good book feel like work instead of enjoyment 4y
JillR @Kalalalatja I admit I only read it in the first place as it was a book club choice. It did feel like hard work and I had to have another book to read alongside it which I never normally do! But don‘t regret giving it a go, the good thing about book clubs I guess! 4y

I am posting one book per day from my extensive to-be-read collection. No description and providing no reason for wanting to read it, I just do. Some will be old, some will be new. Don‘t judge me - I have a lot of books. Join the fun if you want.

LOVED this! As a total classics nerd anything from Greek / Roman times always appeals to me, and this was so original. Written in verse, it tells the story of a young black girl growing up in Roman Londinium, really funny, but with some really poignant moments too.

This one was recommended to me yesterday by a friend who works at my favourite independent book shop.

Only a few pages in but already in love with this book - it‘s not ideal for a road trip, though, because it begs to be read out loud ...

I find that if I make a rigid reading list I suddenly want nothing to do with those books but for the last couple months I've had success with "assigning" myself 2-3 books and letting myself follow my fancies for the rest of my reading. These are the three I've picked for March. No reason other than they've all been on my shelves and been ignored thus far.
