As Redwall slumbers in the summer sun, it is unaware that the mountain stronghold of Salamandastron lies besieged by the weasel army of Ferahgo the Assassin, and that the deadly Dryditch fever is creeping towards the Abbey. But the sword of Martin the Warrior sends Samkin and Arula from Redwall over forest, swamp and great waters to try and save Salamandastron from being turned into a centre of evil power. . . . .

Really quite good. Reminded me a lot of the hobbit and lord of the rings. High fantasy, lots of characters, rotating chapters, lots and lots of small things get in the way of the goal. Loved the audio!

Cute start. I like the full cast of narrators. I usually listen at 1.5 speed, but listening to mice and squirrels talk that fast is no good! 😖 Listening as the snail‘s pace of 1x speed. 😅

Salamandastron breaks the mold of the previous Redwall books and yet still immerses readers in a wonderful tale filled with heroes, quests, and found family. The fifth book of the Redwall series provides a healthy dose of Redwall lore, wholesome adventure, and great characters. Readers will be sure to enjoy this fast-paced installment of the Redwall series.

Day 7: Salamandastron by Brian Jacques #7days7books

The Redwall series was another staple of my childhood. This was the first ‘children‘s‘ series where there were real consequences for actions. Characters died, they made bad decisions and other people were hurt or died, there was guilt and shame and it felt much more real than other children‘s books that were around when I was younger.

BookmarkTavern This was one of my favorite series growing up. And I still reread it to this day! ❤️ 5y
PuddleJumper @ozma.of.oz I haven't re read for a long time. Do they still hold up? 5y
BookmarkTavern For the most part. They feel a little formulaic sometimes, and there is definitely a discussion to be had in the strict separation of evil animals and good animals. But I still love them. And the descriptions of the feasts still make me hungry. 😁 5y

BookmarkTavern I ended up getting the official cookbook! The recipes are a lot of fun! 5y
Jess861 This was one of my favourite series as a kid! I have almost all of them now waiting for my little guy for when he is older. But I agree with your comment - they all followed the same formula (for the most part) and there was definitely separation of evil and good. 5y
PuddleJumper @ozma.of.oz Same! 5y
PuddleJumper @Jess861 Yes, I remember them getting a bit more nuanced later on but the separation of morality based on species was always a bit... Not good. They were still amazing and engaging books 5y

My phone has been acting up and it's been a rough week, but book mail makes everything better. I can't decide if a desire to reread the Redwall books is a good idea or bad. I loved those books as a kid, give me talking animals any day!
