Not Norman
Not Norman: A Goldfish Story | Kelly Bennett
3 posts | 6 read | 2 to read
Norman the goldfish isnt what this little boy had in mind. He wanted a different kind of pet one that could run and catch, or chase string and climb trees, a soft furry pet to sleep on his bed at night. Definitely not Norman. But when he tries to trade Norman for a "good pet," things dont go as he planned. Could it be that Norman is a better pet than he thought? With wry humor and lighthearted affection, author Kelly Bennett and illustrator Noah Z. Jones tell an unexpected and positively fishy tale about finding the good in something you didnt know you wanted.

This Realistic fiction (RF) book is about a kid who doesn‘t want his pet fish Norman. This is a great read for students and it teaches them about loving what you have. The teaching strategy I would use for this is Readers Theatre (RT). RT is a great way for student to show and act out how the characters feel in the book. It‘ll get students moving and it‘ll help with understanding since they are able to put themselves in the book.

WendyV I love your idea for RT! I haven‘t heard of this book before but I just finished two books that featured a goldfish. After reading your post, I think I need this to add to my collection of goldfish books! 6y

Hervela.L I love reading this book! I used to read it to a bunch of three-year-olds and they loved it. (edited) 6y
DrSpalding We read this book to over 100, four and five-year-olds to celebrate read for the record 2015! Excellent choice. Because the story is told from a dog‘s point of view, we had canine companions provide puppies and dogs for the children. As we read, the dogs barked! It was a wonderful experience.❤️📚🐕 6y
kylamarie5 @DrSpalding I actually volunteered for that event and helped out! I read this book to two little boys. That‘s why I have the book☺️ 6y
DrSpalding Oh Kyla!!! Were you in the FELLC? 6y
kylamarie5 @DrSpalding The reason I volunteered was because i was in the STEP program & FEA at the time. Dr. Goodman told us about it and got us to go! 6y

I love a picture book that puts what might be considered a diverse character in an everyday, ordinary situation. It is important for our children/students to see themselves in cultural and ordinary situations.
