Fifteen Postcards
Fifteen Postcards | Kirsten McKenzie
5 posts | 2 read | 3 to read
Following the unexplained disappearance of her parents, and in a last ditch attempt to save the antique store she has inherited from financial ruin, Sarah Lester takes on a deceased estate. Amongst the estate is a collection of fifteen vintage postcards. Sarah is unprepared for what these postcards hint at about their reclusive former owner, and soon they complicate her life in unimaginable ways. Traversing three continents and two centuries, where tiger hunts and ruby necklaces are irrevocably entwined with murders and mysteries, auction houses and antiquities, Sarah is drawn into the enigma that could solve her parents' disappearance.

This novel may or may not be interesting; I haven't yet taken the time to read the description in any detail: what I am most excited to find out about is that there's such a thing as the Historical Novel Society! Were you already aware of this, @LeahBergen ?

https://historicalnovelsociety.org/reviews/fifteen-postcards/

TrishB I follow the page on fb too. 8y
Donna_sBookMinute I'm gonna read this. I enjoy reading historical fiction. I also have an interest in antique shops and would love to read a novel that includes one in the storyline. There's also a sequel entitled, "The Last Letter." 8y
shawnmooney @Donna_sBookMinute Great! I recently read a book that, while it was not central to the story, featured a scene set in an antique shop in London that was so brilliant and memorable that I can remember that scene vividly several months later: 8y

Donna_sBookMinute Great recommendation! I've added it to my stack. Thanks. 8y
shawnmooney @Donna_sBookMinute Wonderful! I'll be very curious to hear what you think! 8y
Lindy @shawnmooney One of the panels at the Vancouver Writers Fest last year featured 4 authors whose most recent books have been described as historical fiction. All 4 vehemently denied that categorization, surprising me, because I hadn't realized the stigma was strong against this genre. 8y
shawnmooney @Lindy That's so interesting! I haven't read enough historical fiction, but I do have a sense that some of it is probably really crappy, and the better writers don't want to be associated with it. I want to read more widely and find out more about this. 8y
Lindy @shawnmooney Yes, so the event was called Grand & Monumental with panelists Yaa Gyasi, Madeleine Thien, Colson Whitehead & Peter Behrens. 8y
LeahBergen Yes! I've read their reviews on upcoming books for years (but not so much anymore because ... you know... Litsy 😉) 8y
LeahBergen @Lindy I don't quite know what to make of this. In one way it seems like a bit of the "genre snobbery" that we hear about and in another, well, I can see where these authors are coming from. "Historical Fiction" really IS almost a sweeping generalization of a category, right? 8y
