The Good Byline
The Good Byline: A Riley Ellison Mystery | Jill Orr
10 posts | 10 read | 20 to read
Meet Riley Ellison, a smart, quirky, young library assistant whos become known in her hometown of Tuttle Corner, Virginia, as Riley Bless-Her-Heart. Ever since her beloved granddaddy died and her longtime boyfriend broke up with her, Riley has been withdrawing from life. In an effort to rejoin the living, she signs up for an online dating service and tries to reconnect with her childhood best friend, Jordan James, a reporter at the Tuttle Times. But when she learns that Jordan committed suicide, Riley is shaken to the core. Riley agrees to write Jordan's obituary as a way to learn more about why a young woman with so much to live for would suddenly opt out. Jordans co-worker, a paranoid reporter with a penchant for conspiracy theories, convinces Riley that Jordans death was no suicide. He leads her down a dangerous path toward organized crime, secret lovers, and suspicious taco trucks. Rileys serpentine hunt for the truth eventually intersects with her emerging love life, and she makes a discovery that puts everything Riley holds dearher job, the people she loves, and even her lifein danger. Will writing this obituary be the death of her?

A cute book. Took a little while to get into it even though I absolutely loved the first line. But I was sold as soon as Riley started explaining how librarians have masters degrees. Show love to librarians and I'm a happy reader.

I've not been reading much lately, thanks to the Unbound Book Festival. But this was a perfect way to get back in the saddle. Funny, clever, quick-moving - everything I want in a mystery novel. Highly recommended.

Liberty @angrylilasian Update: it's not. Come for the cute storyline, stay for the casual racism! 😡 7y

Blowing through this one! Stopped halfway to run to the store for my favorite chocolate treats. (Do the pastel ones taste better to anyone else?)

This week, I remembered why I don't read mystery/thrillers all the time. I CANNOT STOP. Or sleep. Because I can't stop.
