Tales of a Female Nomad
Tales of a Female Nomad: Living at Large in the World | Rita Golden Gelman
I move throughout the world without a plan, guided by instinct, connecting through trust, and constantly watching for serendipitous opportunities. From the Preface Tales of a Female Nomad is the story of Rita Golden Gelman, an ordinary woman who is living an extraordinary existence. At the age of forty-eight, on the verge of a divorce, Rita left an elegant life in L.A. to follow her dream of connecting with people in cultures all over the world. In 1986 she sold her possessions and became a nomad, living in a Zapotec village in Mexico, sleeping with sea lions on the Galapagos Islands, and residing everywhere from thatched huts to regal palaces. She has observed orangutans in the rain forest of Borneo, visited trance healers and dens of black magic, and cooked with women on fires all over the world. Ritas example encourages us all to dust off our dreams and rediscover the joy, the exuberance, and the hidden spirit that so many of us bury when we become adults. From the Trade Paperback edition.

Bailedbailed

Rita found herself suddenly and unexpectedly divorced and decided a cheap way to live would be to hop from one developing country to another. This felt super exploitative to me and reeked of white privilege. Gross. It was going to be my Nicaragua book, but I‘ve found something else.

Librarybelle I read this years ago, and I agree with you from my recollection of it. I read it for work, so I had to finish it; others on the committee were in love with it. Me, not so much. 5mo

Bailedbailed

I love travel...I'm sure the author is a lovely creature but I don't think I could travel with this gal and how she gushes about herself. The places are facinating but I had to bail.

More of a wish tree than a Christmas tree. Smirk and I will be celebrating Christmas lite this year. 😆

Tagged one of my favorite books: Tales of a Female Nomad where the reader gets a taste of countries that are not on most tourist‘s itinerary. #oneKgiveaway #catsoflitsy
@Hooked_on_books

JamieArc I completely forgot about this book! I read it years ago and loved it. I should make it a point to reread. Thanks for the reminder! 6y
Hooked_on_books Nice pick! I actually have it on my shelves. I should probably get around to reading it. 😬 6y
Dolly @JamieArc @Hooked_on_books some readers had a problem with the author‘s personality. I noticed it too but compartmentalized so I could enjoy the trip. 6y
Bklover Smirk is such a great name! 6y
Dolly @Bklover I like the name but she‘s not very sassy just sweet and polite. Plus saying Smirk doesn‘t make me have much of a kissy-type face, so most times I call her Pookie 6y

Pickpick

Just finished this for book club. A middle aged woman, recently & somewhat unexpectedly divorced, decides to sow her adventurous oats & travels alone to various parts of the world, immersing herself into the culture of each community. Enjoyed this for the most part, and somewhat envious of the author's outgoing personality which enabled her to do some of the things she did. I started on audio, but switched over to book format, which was better.

At the beginning I disliked the author but discovered I actually felt more jealousy than dislike. Women just aren't able to do what she did. She left a cushy lifestyle for extended travel in remote areas of the world immersing herself into families, native culture, local food, & ceremonies. She's brave, social, pushy & trusting. If you tend to jump to judgement of others this book may annoy you as it did others who reviewed. Face value!

KCofKaysville @Dolly. Great review! 3y

Self-medicating in a difficult week. Catnip for toys for Smirk and tea and armchair travels for me. I'm in Guatemala headed for Nicaragua in a few pages. There may have also been copious amounts of ice cream involved.

ReadingEnvy Tales of a Female Nomad is light but good. I actually kept my copy to reread. I'd vote for that or The Time Traveler's Wife. 7y
