The Old Patagonian Express
The Old Patagonian Express: By Train Through the Americas | Paul Theroux
4 posts | 6 read | 8 to read
Starting with a rush-hour subway ride to South Station in Boston to catch the Lake Shore Limited to Chicago, Theroux winds up on the poky, wandering Old Patagonian Express steam engine, which comes to a halt in a desolate land of cracked hills and thorn bushes. But with Theroux the view along the way is what matters: the monologuing Mr. Thornberry in Costa Rica, the bogus priest of Cali, and the blind Jorge Luis Borges, who delights in having Theroux read Robert Louis Stevenson to him.

Day 9: #3Books that made me want to travel

▪️The Old Patagonia Express increased my passion for travelling in Latin America in the 90s
▪️In Among the Believers Naipaul‘s travels through non-Arabic Islamic countries and his fascinating experiences made me want to make the exact same journey
▪️Amazing Train Journeys: Since a trip by ‘California Zephyr‘ across the US I am a bit obsessed by travelling by train. This book makes me longing for more.

Ruthiella Train travel is the best. You can actually SEE something! (as opposed to flying). 4y
BarbaraBB @Ruthiella Even better: you can see something AND read 😉💕 4y

(Day 1 - #GetOutTheMap)

*Paul Theroux has traveled the map. This song made me think of all the times Theroux may have gotten out the map. For all of you Theroux addicts out there, he has a new one coming out in October: “On the Plain of Snakes: A Mexican Journey.”
*The images above are representative of the lyrics of the song.

KarenUK Nicely done! I just love this song... just makes you want to jump in a car and take off...... 💕🎶 5y

Honduras, Ecuador, and a train ride from Boston to Argentina. I can always count on Theroux for a sometimes amusing, sometimes bitter tour of a new country; fiction and non-fiction. Definitely top five author.

CherylDeFranceschi The Mosquito Coast was one of the most visceral reads. I really felt like I was there with them. An incredible book! 8y
RanaElizabeth @CherylDeFranceschi Yes! Visceral is a good description. Theroux fascinates me as he has such an amazing sense of place and detail. I first fell in love with his travel books and then proceeded to buy everything of his I came across. 8y
CherylDeFranceschi Ha! I did it the opposite way! 8y

Pickpick

Travel with Paul Theroux by train through the Americas, from Boston to Mexico to Colombia to Argentina. The Old Patagonian Express is the perfect book to quench that summer wanderlust. Also comes with excellent maps at the front (our favorite!)
