Also, can we just dwell on how much FUN this book is to both look at & read? Thoroughly enjoying immersing myself in Japanese culture through the lens of no less than 30 different iconic Japanese authors! #japaneseliterature #japanwriting #readtheworld

Andrea comes to Barcelona to live with family while attending university. Once there, she learns things are not good in her family home and she makes few friends attending class. Yet, she perseveres through a difficult year to finally find her way. The mood of much of this book is dark, but the detail in creating that mood and the hope in the end made it a light pick.

There were a few aspects of the way this was written, terminology used by the characters that seemed odd for the time and the switching between perspectives, that sometimes distracted me from the experience of the story. However, the story itself of a woman raising her children on her own in the Australian bush and meeting an aboriginal man on the run was powerful. I was completely caught up in their stories and how those stories came together.

Daisey *I accessed this audiobook through the #Librofm Educator ALC program.

Tamra I‘m anxious to read this! Have you seen the film? I haven‘t yet. 2mo
Daisey @Tamra I haven‘t. I just happened to download it from Libro.fm and then realized it would be a great choice for an Australia book. I‘d like to say I‘ll look up the movie now, but I rarely actually get to a movie after reading the book. 2mo
Tamra @Daisey I‘m always looking for a good film or show to watch for the treadmill. 😂 2mo

I made a breakfast quesadilla this morning to have alongside a few pages of my new book. This is my pick for Spain this month.

I liked this, but I think I either needed more context for the historical aspect than the few minutes of online reading I did or more love for Great Expectations to truly appreciate it.

BkClubCare Oh! One of my favorites 3mo
Librarybelle Good to know about the context and how helpful it would be to have some knowledge of Great Expectations! 3mo
Daisey @BkClubCare Do you love Great Expectations or Dickens in general? I feel like that would have made this more impactful for me. (edited) 3mo
BkClubCare @Daisey - not sure if I have truly read Great Expectations or just “know” the story, and I like Dickens well enough. Can‘t remember why I enjoyed this one so much but I did. Years ago 😊 3mo

It was a beautiful evening, so I spent a bit of time in the hammock in the back yard with Gandalf and my current audiobook. Mr. Pip is set in Papua New Guinea and includes the only white man remaining on the island reading Great Expectations to students in the local school.

This book was a rather odd but delightful journey around Finland. I was by turns baffled by the main character Vatanen‘s choices and amused by the resulting events. Compared to much of my reading it was a generally lighter and entertaining read, although Vatanen does make some choices that get him into a some serious scrapes.

This book is an interesting mix of an older parent trying to find new happiness in the face of loss, family dynamics, immigration (to England), and Ukrainian history. It‘s definitely got some dark humor while also delving into realistic family issues. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

This afternoon I made spicy jollof rice with chicken while I listened to the end of this audiobook. I had sympathy for most of the women at some point during the story. I could believe in the beginning that Afi was naive enough to think her situation would change, and in the later part, I appreciated her determination to not just go along with the family‘s expectations. This was absolutely a different cultural experience for me to read about.

Texreader That dish sounds good. Ghana is definitely a different world. 6mo
Daisey @Texreader I had a hard time finding a recipe for Ghana with easily accessible ingredients that also sounded like something I would like, but this turned out great. 6mo

Luthien and I took a longer walk again today and I started listening to this audiobook. I‘m intrigued so far, but can‘t say I‘m optimistic about how the story is going to go for the main character.
