Enemy of God
Enemy of God: A Novel of Arthur | Bernard Cornwell
4 posts | 14 read | 10 to read
With The Winter King, the first volume of his magnificent Warlord Chronicles, Bernard Cornwell established himself as the storyteller who could reinvent the legend of King Arthur for our time. Now with Enemy of God, Cornwell's magical re-creation continues. Having defeated the last holdouts of civil war in southern Britain, Arthur has secured Mordred's throne. But he must still face raging conflicts between the old ways and the new, as well as foes more powerful and more dangerous--because they pose as friends. Brilliantly written and peopled with the familiar faces of legend along with new ones, Enemy of God is an immensely powerful continuation of a modern classic.

Audible had a sale. These are the books I bought last week.

At the start of their sales I scroll through all the books. I copy the covers of the books I‘m interested in to my camera roll. Then I decide how much I can spend and start deleting. I usually end up with more than I can afford so I start checking the library apps.

The last 2 bios that I read were 2 of the books I couldn‘t afford.

Does anyone else do something like this?

Second in his magnificent Arthurian trilogy, and this one is even better than the first, perhaps because we plunge straight into the psychodrama of Arthur, Guinevere, Lancelot and Mordred, without the stage-setting that made volume 1's first 50 pages a bit stodgy. Merlin continues to steal every scene he appears in.

Painfully slow. I was so looking forward to it after reading The Winter King, but although Cornwell conjures his worlds with a vivid authenticity (fusing myth and fact into believable History) this one drags.

After finishing the first two books in this series on audio in 3 days, I realized after some investigation that I listened to the abridged versions by mistake 😡. Now I can't decide whether to go back and listen to the full versions or what. I kept thinking it felt like something was missing even though the story was good.
