The Summer of the Danes
The Summer of the Danes | Ellis Peters
5 posts | 6 read | 5 to read
With one civil war on hold, Brother Cadfael returns home, only to stumble into another bloody conflict In the summer of 1144, a strange calm has settled over England. The armies of King Stephen and the Empress Maud, the two royal cousins contending for the throne, have temporarily exhausted each other. On the whole, Brother Cadfael considers peace a blessing. Still, a little excitement never comes amiss to a former soldier, and Cadfael is delighted to accompany a friend on a mission of diplomacy to his native Wales. But shortly after their arrival, the two monks are caught up in another royal feud. The Welsh prince Owain Gwynedd has banished his brother Cadwaladr, accusing him of the treacherous murder of an ally. The reckless Cadwaladr has retaliated by landing an army of Danish mercenaries, poised to invade Wales. As the two armies teeter on the brink of bloody civil war, Cadfael is captured by the Danes and must navigate the brotherly quarrel that threatens to plunge an entire kingdom into chaos.

Ebook on sale today.

I love the Cadfael series and for a long time the ebooks were free. Unfortunately that special stopped well before I finished the series, so I haven‘t read this one. I‘d love to find the IRL books and buy the series.

TheAromaofBooks Oh, these really make so much more sense if you read them in order - they build on each other a great deal, and the final two books are SUCH a satisfying conclusion!! I found mine on ebay for not a terrible amount - sometimes if you type in what you want and add the word “lot“ someone is selling a whole batch of them for cheaper - I got around 15 of them all from the same person for only about $2/book!! 5y
Texreader @TheAromaofBooks That‘s so cool! I‘ll give it a try! 5y
Crazeedi I need to read this seies!!! 5y
Texreader @Crazeedi They are excellent, and even better they are quick reads. I want to find the PBS series to watch. 5y
Crazeedi @Texreader oh I'll have to look for that show! I've had these on my tbr for a long time 4y
