Second Time Around | Mary Higgins Clark

Nicholas Spencer, charismatic head of the medical research company Gen-Stone, involved in the development of an anticancer vaccine, suddenly disappears. His private plane crashes, but his body is not found. Rocking the financial and medical world even more, comes the shocking revelation that Spencer had looted Gen-Stone of huge sums of money - and that his wife, Lynn, is accused of having participated in the scam. Narrowly escaping death when her mansion is set on fire, Lynn turns to her stepsister, Carley, a columnist for the Wall Street Weekly, to help prove that she was not her husband's accomplice. As Carley proceeds with her investigation, she is confronted by seemingly impenetrable questions: Is Nicholas Spencer dead or in hiding? Was he guilty or set up? And as the facts begin to unfold, she becomes the focus of a dangerous group involved in a sinister and fraudulent scheme.

Still plugging away at this book... it's just not my cup of tea. BUT, thankfully it's a library book, so I didn't waste any money on it. Has anyone gotten a library book that has handwritten corrections from a previous reader? I'm not a fan of writing in books, but I liked seeing this. Like SOMEONE cared enough to correct this mistake.

thebacklistbook If my library saw that someone had done that they would make them buy the book. 5y
Wildly_Bookish Wow. I can understand the thinking. People shouldn't be writing in books that aren't their own, but just a tiny little correction? Seems excessive. 5y

Guys, help. I have to read this book for my IRL book club and it's just not going well. How do you get yourself to push through when a book just doesn't pull you in? Suggestions?

thebacklistbook You could just come prepared to discuss your feelings about it rather than forcing a finish. Unless you mean this is for grades. In this case I would read it for short bursts in between other things I actually like doing such as yoga. 5y
Wildly_Bookish It isn't for grades, and I do like the idea of coming prepared to discuss my feelings, however I have never not finished a book. I don't want this to be the one that breaks my record, because it's not really too awful. Just not my particular favorite. Thank you for the suggestion to read in bursts between other things I like. That's really helpful. 5y

Started this book today. Not my usual choice, and I've never read Mary Higgins Clark, but my IRL book club, #everythingbutselfhelp, chose it this month.

Pickpick

Mary Higgins Clark writes such delightful mysteries. This one is packed with mysteries to solve: a missing man from a plane crash, cancer curing research records gone missing, extramarital relationships, a man on a killing spree, and more!

tonyahoswalt I stopped reading her several years ago, but I've decided to give her latest a try when it comes out. 6y
NatalieR @tonyahoswalt I like her books. I also read them in honor of my grandma who loved MHC and gave me my love for reading. ❤️ 6y
TorieStorieS My grandmother and I also used to trade MHC books back and forth! Every time I pick one up now, it makes me feel close to her! 💕💕💕 6y
