#californication of Chinese immigrants from POV of 2nd generation 1st born daughter. There's a sense of place (San Fran), time and immigrant experience (her parents) and the responsibilities/obligations of the 1st daughter. The struggles of learning a new language, translating for parents limited English, finding jobs as immigrants and cultural practices swirl around a tragic incident with 2nd daughter Ona. 4⭐

(May 2019) Beautiful story about family, womanhood, love, and immigrant live in the United States. Although definitely sad at times (and a major trigger warning: suicide) the way the author is able to guide you through the darkness with her beautiful prose and complex characters is really compelling.
It‘s been a rough few days and I‘ve not finished this small-but-really-packs-a-punch book. Angel is reminding me to sleep and self-care but it‘s hard knowing that my other cat‘s health is rapidly declining. She‘s been my constant reading companion and we used to joke that books were her catnip; now it seems I can‘t pick up a book without crying. #catsoflitsy
