Animals of a Bygone Era
Animals of a Bygone Era: An Illustrated Compendium | Maja Säfström
8 posts | 5 read | 10 to read
A beautifully illustrated collection of fascinating, surprising, and funny facts about extinct animals. In the past, amazing and strange animals roamed the earth, including giant sea scorpions, tiny horses, enormous sloths, and fierce "terror birds." These and many more fantastic extinct animals are illustrated in this whimsical collection by Swedish artist Maja Säfström.

I want to post images from every other page, but instead I will encourage all of you to pick up this compendium of extinct animals rendered in sweet line drawings, with very brief information and funny comments. The Swedish author/illustrator writes: “I hope that you learn something new and are reminded of the beautiful, complex and delicate history of this world.†Appealing to all ages and would make a great gift for a family.

Terror Birds (phorusrhacos) were once the largest predators in South America. (They were taller than a person!)

Humour starts right on the table of contents page, with a dinosaur reacting to the news that her kind will not be included in the book. And the hand-drawn art starts with the lovely #endpapers.

Book covers that represent my October reading. I haven‘t even posted reviews of all of them yet on Litsy. (Too busy reading.) I will make a separate post featuring my 5-star reads because if I try to star them above, the covers are so tiny that my stars will obliterate them. 😜

Another really interesting and fun book by this author, this one about animals now extinct. The drawings are wonderful matched with the random facts about the creatures. I loved it. #readwomen

Maja Säfström's somewhat whimsical illustrations perfectly accompany tidbits about animals that no longer roam our planet. âââ
