But You LOOK Just Fine
But You LOOK Just Fine: Unmasking Depression, Anxiety, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder, Panic Disorder and Seasonal Affective Disorder | Sahar Abdulaziz, Carol Sveilich
2 posts | 1 to read
"Those who live with a mood disorder often wear a social mask of normalcy and calm even though they are living with disruptive psychic pain on the inside. Some people may be carrying around a traumatic event from the past that causes great despair, or they may be in constant inner turmoil, yet they present as being "just fine" in appearance and demeanor. 'But You LOOK Just Fine' offers candid counsel and acts as a user-friendly guide of innovative information and compassion to those with mood disorders. It is also a unique tool for mental healthcare providers. The book includes creative coping tools and heartfelt insight from those individuals who know firsthand what it's like to wake up with these disorders." --P. [4] of cover.

“People with depression can't just snap out of it or "turn that frown upside down." Depression is a painful and overwhelming state that makes one unable to function, to think clearly or reasonably, or to want to simply face another day. Many people suffer alone and in silence because they are scared or ashamed. They feel weak…or pitiful. How can a person be incapable of having joy? “Why can‘t I just have a good time? Why can‘t I get on with it?”

“A disability that is not apparent in the person‘s appearance is no less intrusive, no less painful, no less disturbing than one that can be spotted across the room. And, yet, many people fail to respect the tremendous impact that the invisible disability has on the human enduring it.”

LauraBrook Just from this alone, I know I need to read this book. As someone with multiple health issues, I look like any other fat person. I'm hoping this will give me some language to help explain to people what's really going on and how they should check their thoughts before unloading them on someone. (Sorry - can you tell this hits close to home?) 7y
Sahar @LauraBrook 🌺 Those who must face the challenges of easily concealed mood disorders are forever having to explain themselves---under the microscope and judged for a disease they never signed up for. It is a constant battle- not only fending off the side effects of sometimes ineffectual medications or therapies, but the cutting, biting remarks of those who simply do not understand how devastating depression, anxiety, PTSD, OCD, etc are. ❤️ 7y
