Between Them: Remembering My Parents | Richard Ford
9 posts | 6 read | 1 reading | 3 to read
From American master Richard Ford, a memoir: his first work of nonfiction, a stirring narrative of memory and parental love How is it that we come to consider our parents as people with rich and intense lives that include but also exclude us? Richard Fords parentsEdna, a feisty, pretty Catholic-school girl with a difficult past; and Parker, a sweet-natured, soft-spoken traveling salesmanwere rural Arkansans born at the turn of the twentieth century. Married in 1928, they lived alone together on the road, traveling throughout the South. Eventually they had one child, born late, in 1944. For Ford, the questions of what his parents dreamed of, how they loved each other and loved him become a striking portrait of American life in the mid-century. Between Them is his vivid image of where his life began and where his parents lives found their greatest satisfaction. Bringing his celebrated candor, wit, and intelligence to this most intimate and mysterious of landscapesour parents livesthe award-winning storyteller and creator of the iconic Frank Bascombe delivers an unforgettable exploration of memory, intimacy, and love.

Pickpick

This was a quiet, reflective memoir about Ford's parents, ordinary people who were well loved and faced the same types of challenges we all do and moved forward through them. Enjoyable read.

"Incomplete understanding of our parents' lives is not a condition of their lives. Only ours. "

BB1958 I highly recommended this book for the many observations, like this one, that Ford makes not about his parents or himself but about all of us- 7y

Richard Ford was interviewed recently at a live event on The Guardian Books podcast. His new memoir about his parents sounds good, and he has lots to say about writing, my favourite of which is a quote from Somerset Maugham.

I'm not sure what "specially bound by the publisher " means in this instance, but it is a lovely book. I'm enjoying it very much. Cheryl Strayed wrote a nice review of it in today's New York Times Book Review. #SignedSundays

elkeOriginal All it means is that he signed the pages and then they were bound into the book at the printer. I like these pages because they feel like they have a bit more of a presentation to them - like a special edition 👍 (edited) 7y
SharonGoforth @elkeo Thanks! I knew it was pre-signed, but wasn't aware of the exact process. 7y
