Guerrilla Girls' Bedside Companion to the History of Western Art
Guerrilla Girls' Bedside Companion to the History of Western Art | Guerrilla Girls
1 post | 3 read | 3 to read
Take a romp through the last two thousand years of Western Art with the Guerrilla Girls as your guides, and find out the real who, what, when, and why of art history. Who put all those naked men in the classical section of museums? What were the "do's" and "don'ts" for female artists as "civilization" marched across Europe? Why did nuns have more fun in medieval times? This wisecracking but cleverly wise story of art is guaranteed to turn history on its head - and maybe a few historians too. Sprinkled throughout are "believe it or not" quotations from so-called experts; useful facts (consider how many prostitutes and how few suffragettes were painted in the nineteenth century); and reproductions of famous art works "enhanced" for historical accuracy and revenge.

#Philadelphiafreedom Mary Cassatt lived in Philly (and even West Chester also), attended art school in Philly (the PAFA), but found more artistic freedom abroad. I don't have any bios specifically on her, so here is a page from the book tagged. The authors write a obit for her because she didn't get the recognition she deserved in her lifetime as a pioneering impressionist artist.

DivineDiana I am a fan of Mary Cassatt! I remember my daughter writing a report on her in elementary school, and I still have the book about her life that I bought her at the time. 8y
Cinfhen I've never heard of her ??I guess she "fled" before my time ... 8y
Zelma I got to see an exhibit of her works at the Art Institute when I live in Chicago. She is fantastic! 8y

Nebklvr I loved painting she did of her sister..I know she used family quite a bit and I can't think of the name but it was gorgeous. Sad because her sister became quite ill shortly thereafter, I believe. 8y
ValerieAndBooks @DivineDiana yes, she's a great artist! Your daughter made an excellent choice on topic 😊. 8y
ValerieAndBooks @Cinfhen long before your time 😊. You can look for her art if you get to the Philadelphia Museum of Art this summer. 8y
ValerieAndBooks @Zelma I loved that museum when I visited. How nice that you got to see an exhibit focusing on her! 8y
Zelma @ValerieAndBooks it's always been my favorite museum in Chicago. 💕 8y
ValerieAndBooks @Nebklvr yes. That is an excellent painting. I did recently read a historical fiction about her sister (in tag, which I unfortunately didn't care for). I should look for a good bio of Mary Cassatt. which surely would include her family life. (edited) 8y
Lynnsoprano I've seen a couple of her paintings in traveling exhibits through our art museum in West Palm Beach. Love her work. 8y
