Shadow Puppet
Shadow Puppet | Georges Simenon
6 posts | 5 read
A new translation of this gripping domestic tragedy, set in Simenon's very own neighbourhood. Book twelve in the new Penguin Maigret series. One by one the lighted windows went dark. The silhouette of the dead man could still be seen through the frosted glass like a Chinese shadow puppet. A taxi pulled up. It wasn't the public prosecutor yet. A young woman crossed the courtyard with hurried steps, leaving a whiff of perfume in her wake. Summoned to the dimly-lit Place des Vosges one night, where he sees shadowy figures at apartment windows, Maigret uncovers a tragic story of desperate lives, unhappy families, addiction and a terrible, fatal greed. Penguin is publishing the entire series of Maigret novels in new translations. This novel has been published in previous translations as Maigret Mystified and The Shadow in the Courtyard. 'Compelling, remorseless, brilliant.' - John Gray 'One of the greatest writers of the twentieth century . . . Simenon was unequalled at making us look inside, though the ability was masked by his brilliance at absorbing us obsessively in his stories.' - The Guardian 'A supreme writer . . . unforgettable vividness.' - The Independent

Domestic noir at its very best. Small minds, small lives. The lives of people full of the scent of envy, greed, desperation on a small scale.

Domestic noir at its very best. Small minds, small lives. The lives of people full of the scent of envy, greed, desperation on a small scale. These settings are done so well by Simenon. Not a lot of actions or deductions. It‘s human nature on full display in its pettiness, almost intolerable greyness and absence of light. Very well done.

I ended up loving this story, as Maigret uses his feel for people, rather than any great deductive power, to unravel a tragically petit bourgeois murder. The Parisian period atmosphere (contemporary when written in 1932, historical now) is a huge part of the attraction for me.
Simenon describes Maigret as a burly, physically imposing man, and my conception of him is now more Gambon than Atkinson, though, weirdly, still with Atkinson's voice!

Starting my second Maigret - I'm struggling to get into this one, despite the action kicking straight in. It's probably me rather than Simenon. Let's see how it feels when I'm outside of a cup of coffee and a cheese croissant ☕🥐📖

Bookwomble I'm pleased to find it was just me: about halfway through and all the way engaged 😊 5y

Lined up a few more Maigret's courtesy of The Library. There's nearly 20 years between the publication of the earliest and latest of these three books, about 60 stories under the bridge, too. It should be interesting to see how fresh Simenon is over this span of time.

Leftcoastzen Nice covers! 6y
Bookwomble @Leftcoastzen I thought so, too 🙂 They're all credited to Harry Gruyaert of Magnum Photos. 6y
